#SL News 2 Week 46

In the USA Thursday 11/22 is Thanksgiving Holiday. So, week 47 is going to be a ‘no change window’ for Second Life™ upgrades. Also, the normal Server Beta User Group meeting won’t happen.

Server Side Memory Leak

Some people are hearing of script lock ups. Examination of the servers where this is reported reveals memory use at the 32-bit process limit. Maestro Linden thinks recent sensor changes were the source of that problem. In any event the sensor memory leaks have been fixed. I’m unclear on whether those fixes are in the current RC channels.

Still some locks up are being seen. If you are experiencing them, file a JIRA BUG. Script item, region, and as precise a time as possible are needed.

CG Cookie New Blender Animation Training

If you are interested in character animation you probably know about CG Cookie. They have a load of free and pay-for tutorials. All the basic information is free. The advanced and time saving stuff is usually pay-for. So far, everything I’ve paid for I have been happy with. I haven’t paid for all that much, but I have paid for some.

Recently CG Cookie put up a new YouTube video: Animation Toolkit – Training Series for Character Animation in Blender. It is promoting their release of the new training series.

This series gets into things that cannot be imported into Second Life™ with the BVH import. Gaia Clary’s Avastar is progressing toward what I think is the best all around tool for making mesh clothes and animating avatars, human or non-human. One of its better features is the ability to create .anim files that the SL Viewer can import. The .anim file format allows one to use more of the animation features found in Blender.

Dolphin Viewer 3.4.1.26336 Released Review

Dolphin Viewer Logo
Lance has a new release of the Dolphin 3 Viewer out. There is nothing Earth shattering in this release. More fixes and some new minor additions.

There are a couple of known bugs. One has to do with a Texture Refresh crashing the viewer. There is a fix for that and he plans to have it in the next release.

Another has to do with child prims that have Hover Text and scripted movement. That is not working as intended. There is a fix for that too, which he will be adding, hopefully by the next release.

Both of these are minor and you would probably never notice the problems.

nVidia Forum Back

If you are an nVidia owner and have used the nVidia forum, you know they closed it to upgrade it. It like many forums was being overrun by spammers. The forum has been down for weeks. Now it is open, as of November 1 or 12, depending on who you read.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II – From Tom’s Hardware Review

The forum has been rearranged. CUDA developers now have their own forum. If you don’t know, CUDA is more for math geeks than gamer geeks. So, apparently they haven’t played well together.

Firestorm Beta Release

On the 14th the Firestorm-Phoenix Team posted on their blog about the release of a beta version viewer.  The Large Group Editing changes for the server side have been rolled out on the grid. This roll out creates a bit of a problem, but not really.

UDP Cutoff

Once upon a time using the UDP protocol for Second Life was a good idea. Now that the devices that make up the Internet’s infrastructure are smarter and more HTTP aware the use of UDP for downloading large group member lists is not such a good idea. Also, the way users have decided to use groups has changed from what the Lab initially designed for. So, users are sending much larger data sets across the old UDP protocol used for the Group Member List download.

Firestorm Release

UDP packets can be lost and there is very little that can be done to recover them. For SL-users that means the user list of large groups often (usually) fails to load.

The new code now limits the list size to 10k or less for all UDP requests. For those using the SL Viewers and several Third Party Viewers (TPV) the limit makes almost no difference as they already had problems trying to edit lists over 10k.
