Second Life Liquid Mesh Early Warning

UPDATE: 2014/1 –  A newer version of Liquid Mesh called Fitted Mesh is now the standard for mesh clothes. Fitted Mesh is still in beta development in January 2014. Liquid Mesh clothes made pre-Fitted Mesh seem to be usable and are apparently not broken by the implementation of Fitted Mesh. So, Liquid Mesh is now a sort of support way to make mesh clothes.

Liquid Mesh is very very much not supported by the Lab. We hear this at the user group meetings. The Lindens are telling us repeatedly. In some ways the Lindens are getting a bit arrogant about the issue. Like if you didn’t pay attention, tough. We told you. That attitude will walk them into a wall.

The problem is the developers and residents don’t attend the user group meetings.

The image shows jeans made of Liquid Mesh. I was changing the leg muscle settings in Appearance. You can see the jeans changed per the Appearance settings.

SL Materials Viewer 2013-32

We have a new version of the Materials Project Viewer as of August 8. It is version 3.6.3-279651. You can get the download here:  Official Alternate Viewers.

The Release Notes provides an impressive list of fixes, about 5.5 screens of JIRA items. There are 8 known problems listed. This is a significant improvement over the previous release.

This viewer is classed as a Project Viewer. So, if you opt’d in to use Release Candidate viewers you are NOT going to be running this one or any other ‘project’ viewers. At least I am pretty sure you won’t. So, what happens when you install this viewer?

Second Life Camera Scripts

I haven’t tried these nor do I know much about scripting Second Life™ cameras or making machinima. Yumi Murakami however seems to know a bunch. Yumi has posted scripts for the Bijocam on her Wiki User Page. See: User: Yumi Murakami/Bijocam And Other Camera Scripts. Scroll down to get to the scripts.

M.A.G., Machinima Artist Guild, has an article about the BijoCam Construction System. This is an old article from back in 2009. At one time the Bijocam was in XStreet, the old market place for SL. You won’t find it on the current SL Market Place. Yumi released the source code August 7, 2013 and no longer sells the camera system.

In world I find the NeoVictoria SkyMall has a 3 part video tutorial on using the camera and controls. Visit the Machinima InfoHUB. These appear to be old video from the way things appear in SL. But, then the camera is old too.

You’ll find explanations of what the various LSL functions in the script do with the camera in the Wiki Category: LSL Camera.

Yumi added some new code, or at least newer code that was not in the BijoCam package.

I would think this would be something handy for any Machinimist. I am certain I’ve seen machinima made using these camera controls…

CtrlAltStudio Viewer 1.0.0.34218 Released

CtrlAltStudio Viewer is about 3D display. This release is a ‘Main Release’ version.

This viewer does a render for use with shutter glasses, nVidia 3D Vision.

David Rowe the programmer says this is the final release for now. As the Lab and Firestorm update their viewers he will be updating the CtrlAltSudio Viewer.

Earlier I had speculated that he would be headed toward the Oculus Rift. But, in the announcement he says he will be waiting for the Lab to provide Oculus Rift support. So, am wrong. But, he does seem to intended to add Oculus support when it arrives.

Currently there are some interesting things going on. David reports he has been told about someone using an NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 Windows system, projecting onto a 9 foot screen (2.7m) using two Christie LX34 projectors through Polaroid filters…

Someone else is using 3DTV with the viewer.

David says, “GeForce Windows and GeForce Max OSX with NVIDIA 3D Vision appear to work well, at least with recent graphics chips.

You can download the viewer for Windows and Mac here: CtrlAltStudio Viewer 1.0.0.34218.

Note: to use 3D Vision software you need a monitor that can handle 120hz display. Most flat panels are 60hz.

History: 9-11 Boatlift

A friend sent me a link to this in an email. I am surprised I did not know about it. It certainly isn’t something the news media splashed around. The video was made for the tenth anniversary of 9-11.

This is the type of thing free self-reliant people can do. It is the sort of thing government simply cannot organize. This is an example of bottom-up organizing rather than top down. Most people can not comprehend the effectiveness of chaotic systems. Each of us has to decide who we are going to rely on.

The US Coast Guard Commander that issued the radio call for boaters to gather at Governor’s Island is not a part of the political command structure and has no authority over the civilian population. He is part of the Military Command structure where people are taught to act independently and adapt to conditions on the ground.

Second Life News 2013-32 #3

As previously reported, the server rollouts went as planned. The main channel did not get updated this week.

Server Beta Meeting 2013-12
Server Beta Meeting 2013-12

Blue Steel

This Release Channels got the single update rolled out this week. It is a maintenance package with LSL fixes. Details are here: Second Life News 2013-32.

Le Tigre & Magnum

These two channels remain the same as last week.

Next Week

For now the Lindens are planning to roll the Blue Steel Package to the main channel next week. They are planning to roll the SSA package (Le Tigre & Magnum) to the main channel the week after (34).

If you are wondering why SSA (Server Side Appearance) is not rolling forward, it has to do with what some call the ‘ovens.’ The ovens are the backend servers that do the baking for SSA. Those servers are getting an update next week (33). Simon Linden says this will happen behind the scenes and without down time.
