Alchemy Viewer Beta 3.7.19 – Second Life

The Alchemy Viewer team has released a new beta version of their viewer. I have yet to try it. But Inara has written up a good review. See: Alchemy 3.7.19: mainlining HTTP and enhancing legacy search.

The viewer’s page announcing the release is here: Alchemy Beta 3.7.19.

It appears we get a search feature in this version that has a new User Interface (UI). The change will change how you use search. It sounds much more efficient. Still, it depends on the SL Search Engine, so I doubt the hit accuracy has improved. That will take some work on the Linden server side to improve. But, this new UI should be nice to use.

The Camera Control gets compressed. But, this is just the standard camera control, not photo tools, which is why I often use Firestorm.

The World Map gets a revamp. They make more efficient use of screen space, or read as removing white-space from the controls. The panel looks busier now. I’ll have to try it before I can decide if it is better or just different.

Second Life News 2014-35 #3

We have a bit of news from the Third Party Developers Meeting from Friday, 8/29. Chakat Northspring videos the meetings. You can follow him on YouTube and catch those meetings a few hours after they happen.

Viewer news from Oz Linden is pretty thin, his word. I’ve covered most of the viewer news earlier in the week. Oz basically said at this Friday’s Third Party Developers Meeting that projects discussed at the previous meeting are still ongoing and there is no new news on them.

I think this is basically the lull in feature development and bug fixes that comes from the Lindens stopping to work on development tools and upgrade to the new compilers. It is an analogy to car manufactures that stop production of cars to retool for production of the next model year cars.

Alchemy Viewer Release 3.7.14

Sovereign Engineer let me know they have released a new version of the Alchemy Viewer. That put this viewer at version: Alchemy Viewer Beta 3.7.14 – TPV Celebratory Beta. There is a nice write up on the page.

This release comes out with 64-bit versions for Windows and Mac. The 32-bit versions are available too.

This version uses a new font on the UI. It has feature to allow use of legacy profiles, but those panel have been redesigned to conform with the rest of the UI. It includes a region tracker, which I assume lets you track the online status of a region from anywhere in SL.

The download file for Windows is about 33mb. Today’s download was a bit slow. But, I was trying to download about 2:30PM, peak usage time for the Internet in my area.

New TPV on Linden List

I see that Oz Linden added the Alchemy Viewer to the Third Party Viewer list. They describe it as: An experimental Second Life™ viewer striving to be at the forefront of stability, performance, and technological advancement in the open-source metaverse viewer field.

Sovereign Engineer is the lead in this viewer’s development. The blog is here. The downloads are here. The blog still lists the viewer as a beta version. There are only 32-bit versions, AFAIK.

The list of people working on the viewer is shown as:

Drake Arconis (sovereign.engineer) | Project Manager | Lead Developer
Cryo (luminous.luminos) | Linux Developer
Cinder (cinder.roxley) | Mac Developer
Lirusaito (inusaito.kanya) | Feature Fox

The blog appears to have started in June 2013. Inara did a review of the viewer in April 2014: Alchemy: cooking up a TPV
