Viewers

I covered the viewers this weekend in: Second Life News 2014-11 #3. Today the main viewer is: Second Life 3.7.3 (287491).

I also see the wiki has updated (Mar 17 2014) for version 3.7.4.288045… this is the Google Breakpad version that has been added to the RC Viewers List, giving us 6 RC Viewers. Continue reading

Servers

There is not much news to relate about servers. We already know the package that rolled out to the main server channel consisted of bug fixes. The only one which is noticeable, unless you were experiencing one of the bugs, is the fix for Help→About Second Life. The viewer would not consistently report the server version. Now it does.

Server RC’s

In week 10 the Magnum EC channel ran the Sunshine package, the one that supports AISv3. These are the changes to the way the system will deal with inventory. There are no user interface changes. The changes are all backend things. Users should only see more reliable inventory loading and fewer bake fails.

That package is now running on all the RC channels.

Maestro Linden is hoping the Lab can release the project soon. It has been on the RC channel for some weeks now. Continue reading

The main grid did get a roll out this morning.  The package was previously running on Blue Steel and Le Tigre. It is a maintenance upgrade with bug fixes.

The RC code running on Magnum will now run on all three channels. This is the Sunshine RC with the AISv3 code that improves how inventory works adding reliability and stall prevention. It is considered additional work in the Bake Fail or Server Side Appearance project. Continue reading

Retry II SL News 2014-10-3

Whatever, this morning I am reading the meeting transcript. We have good news on Group Ban. Also, there are some serious inventory loss problems afoot. See the heading WARNING.

Servers

We know the main channel got the ‘infrastructure’ update previously running on the Blue Steel and Le Tigre. Users are unlikely to see any change. Continue reading

Second Life News 2014-10-3

I was hooking up a friend’s Netflix yesterday so I missed the Beta Server User Group meeting. Visio is not my favorite TV.

RC Channels

Magnum remained on the AISv3 project, inventory API changes for bake fail solutions. This needs the Sunshine RC Viewer to be experienced. The Linens were doing a pile-on test Wednesday.

WARNING

Tankmaster Finesmith is pointing out they have seen some inventory loss in Magnum/Sunshine. He says there are some JIRA entries popping up as people report having lost all their inventory. Alexa Linden is said to be investigating the issue.  Continue reading

Perspective

We don’t often get any insight into what Lindens are thinking about going on’s in the Lab. Today one gave us a glimpse.

I’ll wrap up and say that there’s a lot of good talking [in the Lab] going on about what works in SL, what doesn’t, what we’ve tried before and all that … as you know some changes take a lot of time and work, others can be done quickly.    But overall I’m more optimistic than I was 6 months ago, and I like that.

Better Building

Ciaran has an article up promoting Penny Patton’s ideas about building things to scale in Second Life™. See: Second Life Content Creators Should Pay Attention To Penny Patton.

Ciaran is focusing on a June 2013 article that Penny wrote: Building a Better Second Life. I covered it at the time it was published: Best Building Practices in Second Life.

If you haven’t read any of these articles, please do before you start building your dream home.  Continue reading

Second Life News & Group Bans 2014-9

At the Beta Server User Group Baker Linden did a recap of the coming Group Bans feature. You can read that recap on Inara’s blog: SL projects update week 9/2: group bans update. She is pretty much quoting Baker, which is what I would do, so I’m not going to repeat the quotes here.

Server Beta UG 2014-09

Group Bans is moving into testing on the Preview Grid. We’ll hear when the Lindens have a test viewer ready and are ready for testers to help. We will probably hear something next week (10). Third Party Viewer Dev’s will be testing their viewers as soon as the test package is on ADITI, which is expected to be next week (10).  Continue reading
