Second Life News 2014-9

Tomorrow (Tuesday) the main channel will get the update that has run on the RC channels for the last two weeks. This is a small package with a couple of bug fixes. One is ‘logout due to premature region restart’ bug. The other bug fix is for some obscure email issue.

RC Channels

Both Blue Steel and Le Tigre will get a new package. The Lindens describe it as an infrastructure update. I have no details on what in the infrastructure the update may be enhancing. We may learn some more tomorrow.

The Magnum channel is getting a different package. This is the package several of us were trying to figure out the status of last week. This package has the AISv3 updates. To make use of the new features you must use the Sunshine Project Viewer. Continue reading

Servers

Not much to report here. Last week we knew that the Release Candidate (RC) channels would not be getting an update. Next week (8) the Lindens are anticipating rolling out a release to the RC channels. Again it will be one release rolling to all three channels.

Capella at night. Materials & Projectors

The package will be a fix for a rare problem estate managers see when restarting a region. It seems when they are the last avatar out, the get logged off. Seems the server is shutting down before they are completely out. This fix will adjust the time between last avatar out and shut down. Continue reading

Altberg

There are lots of blog articles about Ebbe Altberg. Inara has a detailed outline of his resume and some of his personal  interests. See: Ebbe Altberg – a short profile. It seems everyone is blogging about Ebbe. None of us have any idea of how well he will do with Second Life™.

Hamlet of New World Notes is planning to interview Atlberg. That may be the first time we get any idea of whether Altberg can get his head around what SL is.

Strawberry

Strawberry Singh has an article up about a free photo studio. See: StrawberrySingh.com Simple Photo Studio (free).

Jump over to her blog to get the link to the page in the SL Market Place.

As she points out this is a simple studio. If you have been around  SL for a time then you can do most of what photo studio does with a prim. But, if you are not a builder, it is a handy thing to have and the video is a mini tutorial. Continue reading

Servers

Late yesterday, after 7PM PST, the Deploys post appeared. We did get a server update roll to the main channel today (2/4). Tomorrow, Wednesday, we will get a roll to the RC channels. There’s nothing earthshaking in either of the releases.

Server-Scripting UG 2014-5

The package that made it to the main channel is the one that includes the Linden Scripting Language (LSL) function: llModifyLand(). Inara has more on this change. See: SL projects news 6/1: Server, viewer, SSA and AIS project viewer.

The package going to the RC channels is a package with a crash fix. The package is going to all three channels. And that’s about all we know about.  Continue reading

Sever Rolls

Tuesday we got a rollout. This package ran on all three RC channels last week. The package contains only one crash fix. So, this won’t be a noticeable change for most residents.

RC Channels

Once again all three RC channels will get the same package. This one contains very little change. A fix for Linden Scripting Language (LSL) function llModifyLand() and an unnamed bug fix are about it.

Viewers

The main viewer this morning is still 3.6.13-284995.

RC Viewers

We have 4 RC viewers and 1 Project viewer.

  • Second Life FittedMesh Viewer version 3.7.0.285669
  • Second Life HTTP Viewer version 3.6.14.285253
  • Second Life Interesting Viewer version 3.6.14.285213
  • Second Life Maintenance Viewer version 3.6.14.285499

Project Viewers

  • Second Life Project Merchant Outbox Viewer version 3.6.13.284731

Blog News

Blogs are mostly talking about whether Rod was a good or bad CEO for SL.

Otherwise most are writing about places in SL. The others are writing about fashion. It leaves me wondering what is going on with SL. We hear several projects are ongoing but we are hearing little about them. It seems mostly partying and shopping is what’s going on in SL.

Second Life News 2014-4

Monday was Martin Luther King Jr. day in America. It is a holiday for government and numerous businesses. The Lab considers it a holiday, so the Lab was running on holiday staffing levels. This usually means Tuesday and Wednesday server rolls are skipped or pushed back a day.

This week will be different. Maestro Linden told us last week that a rollout is planned for Tuesday and an RC rollout for Wednesday. We did not have one last week, so may there is a push or they are trying something differently. Whatever, we get rolls Tuesday and Wednesday. Continue reading

Second Life’s HTTP Tech Note Explained

There is a section in the Second Life™ forum about technology: Tools and Technology. Thursday afternoon (1/16) Linden lab posted article there titled: Raising the Roof: The HTTP Project. The post is about the changes coming to how the SL Viewer and SL servers communicate.

The abbreviated point in the post is: communication between our viewers and the servers is and is going to be better and does and will use less bandwidth. This means fewer problems logging into Second Life. Also, more reliable connections and fewer disconnects. The changes will mean fewer capabilities from routers and gateways will be used, allowing the less expensive routers to handle Second Life better. And in general things will download faster.  Continue reading

Second Life News 2014-3

This week there are no updates rolling out to the servers. At this point all we know is Maestro Linden has said they want to allow the existing packages to run for another week. We may learn more at today’s (1/14) Server & Scripting meeting.

There are a couple of speculations that it is from a problem with region crossings or the rash of unscheduled inventory maintenance events we have been seeing. The maintenance passes are happening several times per week. SL has been working pretty well for me, so I have no guesses at this point. I do continue to see people in Answers complaining of being logged out. I’ve run into that problem too. But, only once.

Religious Places in SL

We have an interesting new page in the Second Life Wiki: Religious Places. It seems to be the result of effort from Anaimfinity Resident. Anaimfinity notes the page should be complete this month. If you know of place that is not on the list, you can add it.

Mimes

Strawberry Singh has her Monday Mimes going again. This week’s is about practical jokes. I’m admitting nothing… it wasn’t me. Continue reading
