Linden Lab pours MILLIONS into Second Life

Ebbe Linden has posted in the SL Forum. The post is titled Celebrating 14 Years of SL with Investments in Its Future. In it, he says they have budgeted US$ Millions for the coming year, which is awesome.

He tells us about some of the coming changes to Second Life. Some we know about, others are new news.

One change is moving SL to the cloud. I have heard no details. So, exactly what this means is currently speculation. My speculation is this should significantly drop the cost of running the system. I imagine an empty region could be spun down and then only spun up as needed. Would this reduce land cost? It might.

Second Life – Having Problems?

Yes. You aren’t alone. The Lab is aware people are having attachment issues… instead of psychologists, they are using computer tech’s to find the problem. So, we will likely see a fix soon. No years of counseling…

Seems avatar-attachments are not attaching. In a world where genitals are an attachment, this problem could create huge gender identity issues…

Also, some scripted items are not working.

My first login about 8:40 AM SLT from California failed. I made it in with the Alex Ivy RC and then crashed. Five minutes later I successfully logged in with the same viewer. All my parts rendered. So, no gender ID crises for me.

Some think this is related to Grid maintenance performed yesterday. I don’t know. Possible. Follow Grid Status to see when they have the issue resolved.

PS: And they are having trouble with the web site too…

Second Life New Avatars 2017

Everyone is writing about the new Bento Avatars the Lab has added to the Viewer’s Library of starter avatars in inventory. This is the popular video for showing the avatars.

Alicia Chenaux made the video and points out the problem of a new user selecting a full mesh avatar and changing clothes.

Second Life – Copybot Viewer Debate

In case there is ANYONE in Second Life™ that doesn’t know what Copybot Viewers are, they are viewers made from the open source viewers, Linden and third-party, that have been altered to ignore Permissions. A person can use them to download ANYTHING… ANYTHING in Second Life.

There are hot issues in SL that carry loads of emotional energy. The issue of content theft, copyboting, is one of them.

At the last Content Creation UG meeting the subject of content theft, what the Lab does about it, and what CAN be done about it came up. It was a surprisingly calm and somewhat intelligent conversation. Still, the resident thief really annoyed me. Listen/watch the video. (60+ minutes) There are time marks for the various topics in the index below (last page) if you want to find just the juicy parts.

This video is from the last few minutes of Content Creation UG meeting of June 27, 2017. It then contuse for another 45+ minutes after the meeting.

The subject of content theft came up when Brooke Barmy asked the question,

“What is being done about the increase in marketplace copybot accounts, the reasoning behind not banning on the first offense, the reasoning behind not IP banning and the reasoning behind not taking [confiscating] the money back to Linden Lab?
