Oculus Rift Update 2015 Week 13

Quoting from Tech Crunch’s quote of Oculus Chief Scientist Michael Abrash:

While previous versions of the Oculus Rift have required plugging in a separate set of headphones to get the “I’m encapsulated in a virtual space” feeling, the Crescent Bay prototype has its own pair built-in, and the company has said the consumer model will, as well. The Crescent Bay model I played with at CES earlier this year didn’t include features like noise cancellation, so there’s still obvious areas to improve on that aspect of the integrated experience over time.

Samsung Gear VR Heads to More than 100 Best Buys

Seems Samsung is moving their Gear VR out to Best Buy stores for sale (US$199). They, Samsung, are still in beta mode, IMO. This is not the mass market roll out. See the story in Road to VR. But, it is a step to getting to retail release.

I’m not sure Samsung has the Next BIG Thing locked up, but I like their stuff.

Oculus Rift and Marketing in Second Life

This was planned for release on Monday… but, the blog would not cooperate… I see that Ciaran found the article and reported on it.

Once upon a time manufacturers were thinking that Second Life would be a great way to market their products. A big obstacle to marketing online is letting the potential customer see the product and decide they have to have it. A 3D world moves one closer to the being there.

The immersive nature of 3D with Oculus and other HMD devices is re-awakening those hopes and thoughts. There is potential. The site AdWeek has an article by Christopher Heine titled: How Oculus Rift Is About to Reshape Marketing Creativity.

Second Life has prominent mention in the article. What Christopher does not mention is why 3D marketing in SL failed in the first years of SL’s life.  Continue reading

Patterns

Linden Lab has announced they are going to stop development of Patterns, their version of Minecraft, but prettier.

Patterns™ Splash

Patterns™ Splash

Those that purchased it can still play it. But, the server side functions will no longer work (sharing worlds).

So… was it just not providing the rate of return needed… or did the Lab want the Pattern’s developers for development work on SL2?

Second Life and Oculus DK2

Jo Yardley saw Ebbe Altberg/Linden in 1920’s Berlin. He was testing out the Linden Lab Viewer for Second Life with Oculus Rift DK2 support. She also caught his Tweet about having the viewer out next week. I assume he means ‘out’ as in a new RC Viewer update.

If it is as an RC Viewer then I expect it will have the new CDN and HTTP Pipeline features included. But, that is just my guess. The CDN and Pipeline features are probably 2 or more weeks from making it out to the main SL Viewer. But, they would be a BIG plus for an Oculus RC Viewer.  Continue reading

Second Life for Oculus

As builders plan for a world to be seen by Oculus Rift users we hear a bit more about building things to real life scale. It is a good idea and has many benefits.

Babe @ Lost Eden - 2014

Babe @ Lost Eden – 2014

What we aren’t hearing much about is how to avoid making visitors sick, simulator motion sickness. I suppose many think that the Oculus Rift people will take care of such problems. The Oculus people are certainly putting thought and engineering into building a system that will avoid giving people simulator sickness. But, they advise those building for Oculus headsets to make sure they can keep their frame rates above 60 FPS…

I suspect the majority of Second Life users seldom see 60 fps. I know with my Quad Core and GTX560 I seem to get 25 to 50 FPS most of the time. If I am in a crowd, it is more like 8 to 12.  Continue reading

The Euclideon People are Back

About three years ago we started to hear of a company that said they could do amazing things with 3D imaging and rendering, unlimited detail with high frame rates. Well, we have yet to see anything but videos. And now we have another video.

May be we will see something other than a video in 2015.

I also wonder if High Fidelity’s use of voxels is along the same line and if some of this tech might make it into SL2.  Continue reading

Oculus Rift Crescent Bay

The Road to VR CEO Brendan Iribe has announced Oculus releasing news of Crescent Bay, a new Oculus Rift prototype. The specs available are impressive but contain some speculation:

  • Higher Refresh Rate (confirmed as 90Hz)
  • Higher resolution (likely 1440p)
  • (Possibly) Higher FOV
  • Integrated Audio
  • 360 Degree Tracking (LEDs now on back of headset too)
  • Oculus licensed Real Space 3D Audio Specialisation (10 years in development)

Follow Road to VR for more breaking news  on Crescent Bay.
