New Second Life Zipper Project Viewer

The Lindens have announced a faster installing viewer: Project Zipper Viewer. See the SL Blog announcement: Try Project Zipper for Faster Viewer Installation.

The download is: Project Zipper Viewer version 3.7.2.286810.

I am expecting a surprise to arrive any day. This release would seem to be part of the infrastructure change needed. It might also indicate why the surprise’s arrival is taking longer than expected.

I’ll test the new install process if I can fin d the time. But, there are a number of things to play with just now. Plus there is some real life work intruding on my play time.

Second Life News 2014-9

Tomorrow (Tuesday) the main channel will get the update that has run on the RC channels for the last two weeks. This is a small package with a couple of bug fixes. One is ‘logout due to premature region restart’ bug. The other bug fix is for some obscure email issue.

RC Channels

Both Blue Steel and Le Tigre will get a new package. The Lindens describe it as an infrastructure update. I have no details on what in the infrastructure the update may be enhancing. We may learn some more tomorrow.

The Magnum channel is getting a different package. This is the package several of us were trying to figure out the status of last week. This package has the AISv3 updates. To make use of the new features you must use the Sunshine Project Viewer.

Bits & Pieces SL 2014-8

Fabulously Free is a blog I recently started following. It has interesting stuff most every day. They mention the Cherries on Top hunt, running until Feb 28, Free SL Couture, Fab Friends – Advice on SL things, Nail Me – free fashion, and Princess Rose Hunt.

Having watched the blog for a couple of weeks now I have decided this is a good site to recommend to those new to Second Life™, free stuff, advice, and how to’s. And much of the free stuff looks really nice.

The list of hunts Fabulously Free provided this Friday is a couple of dozen long. They list both grid-wide and in-store hunts.

Making Videos in Second Life

There are lots of tutorials on this subject. This article isn’t a tutorial. It is a collection of tutorials and information about making video using Second Life or any virtual world. I saw that Hypergrid Business has an article up titled: 5 tips for video tutorials and 3D simulations. The article is written by Ann Cudworth.

She manages to write the whole article without using the word Machinima. I’m not that much into Machinima so, there may be some nuanced difference between the terms machinima and video tutorials. But, I don’t see it.

From the TPV Meeting Jessica said her team hopes to have the HTTP changes merged in, QA’d and released by March 9. The key word in that is ‘hopes’. Then they will have a couple of months work to do before there next release (in May?).

By early next week (8) they will have a version of the HTTP code merged with Firestorm and out to FS beta testers. But, things are not simple. Read on.

HTTP Coming

HTTP is the project that deals with how the viewer and SL servers talk to each other. Monty Linden has been fixing the Linden code that deals with these communication problems.

Viewers

A viewer hot fix was promoted to the main viewer’s channel. This was on top of the Fitted Mesh promotion earlier in the week. This ‘hot fix’ was to fix the Facebook posting problems. Since it was Valentine’s Day weekend Linden management decided this was the RC (Release Candidate) that should be promoted.

The HTTP RC Viewer is doing well. Jessica Lyon says that Firestorm’s merges of the Fitted Mesh and HTTP code are working well for them. That doesn’t mean it will work well for everyone trying to use the viewer. It just means that within the group currently testing it, things are going well.
