The Snowstorm team is entering a new sprint. The recent Office Hours (OH) meeting shows concentration on some items that annoy residents. For me the top one is Chat.

Latif Khalifa provides a write up of several considerations for fixing chat. See: Viewer Chat Recommendations. At this point we don’t know how the team will see these recommendations or what priorities they will assign, if any. But, it is an interesting consideration and Esbee liked the write up.

One thing I learned is that there are volume adjusters for each AV in a voice conversation. Mouse over the AV and click the Tool Tip that opens. There is a volume adjust in there. They call these panels Inspectors. One can find the inspectors in several places, not just in Tool Tips. Continue reading

If you have checked some of the video from SLCC 2010, or got to attend, you know lots of changes are coming to Second Life, especially to the Second Life Viewer. This article is about the goings on in the Snowstorm team, the group responsible for changing the Second Life Viewer.

Esbee Linden has office hours on Wednesday 8AM-9PM SLT (PDT). One can read transcripts of the meetings in the Wiki on Esbee’s page. User:Esbee Linden He is designated as the Business Lead and Product Owner for the Second Life Viewer. Q Linden and Oz Linden are also Snowstorm project leads. Q is the tech lead and Oz is the open source lead.

Oz Linden made one telling comment in one of his office-hours meetings, “Q was instrumental in recruiting me into LL. Without him convincing me personally that LL needed to do a better job of open source, and that he wanted that to happen, I would not be here.” I think this speaks well to real change coming to Linden Lab. Snowglobe 1.1.0 Update Review

It is always nice to know how many residents are using new beta software. It gives one a sense of how well people like something, assuming they continue using it is a sign of preference and satisfaction. For Snowglobe they have published some of that information. Snowglobe Meterics show about 3,500 Second Life residents using the viewer as of 6m/29d/09.

Torley has a video showing the new map zoom features. In the same blog post as the video they talk about under the hood changes. Snowglobe Features There are new texture download methods in this viewer. They say one won’t likely see much performance improvement for those changes just yet as they are only used in the maps. However, the maps do update much faster so there is promise.
