Kokua Viewer Released for OpenSim

The Kokua team made an announcement. They will be spitting development of their viewer, forking in geek speak. They will make a viewer for OpenSim and one for SL.

Pathfinding and various other things work only on one grid or the other. Now that Linden Lab is going to a CDN system the incompatibilities between is such that OpenSim servers and hosting system will have to change. This is going to be significant incompatibility. The OpenSim host will have to think about how they will handle it. Will OpenSim grids move to CDN? I have never looked into the cost of CDN service, but it is a cost. In the low income realm of OpenSim any additional cost is a problem.

So, as of Kokua Viewer 3.7.8.35024 the Kokua team will be putting out an SL and an OpenSim version of the viewer. This latest one is for OpenSim.

There was a duel use viewer released, I think, as 3.7.12. But, it was having problems on some grids. The numbering indicates a bit of a regression for the OpenSim versions.

Kokua-3.7.6 Viewer Released

The Kokua Viewer had been updated to use the SL Viewer 3.7.5 and 3.7.6 code. Plus there are a bunch of fixes and feature additions. See: Kokua-3.7.6 is released.

There are Kokua versions that have the code to use the Server Side Appearance and Inventory API version 3 (AISv3) updates running in the RC regions and Sunshine RC Viewer. Those versions do not have RLV support. So, for this release you either get RLV or AISv3.

I haven’t used Kokua for some time. If you are using it, let us know how it is working. Imprudence used to be my preferred viewer for cross grid use.

Kokua Viewer 3.6.6 Released

A new Kokua viewer is out. This version has an OpenSim fix for the 4096 Bug. That is going to make lots of OS users happy.  Latif Khalifa, the Singularity Viewer developer, made a patch that fixed the issue. The patch was distributed to Kokua and Firestorm. So, three of the popular viewers in use on OS grids will have the fix.

The 4096 Bug is a long known bug that prevents the user from teleporting more than 4096 grid locations from their current location. It has been very annoying as large grids had to develop jump points, sort of half-way points one teleports to so they can reach their real destination.

Grid locations are a basic 2D X,Y coordinate system. Just as we have 3D X,Y,Z locations within a region, the region is located on a 2D GRID, which is why we call these grids. The actual locations in the grid-region system is GRID: X,Y plus REGION X,Y,Z. If the distance from GRID:X1,Y1 to GRID:X2,Y2 is more than 4096 units the teleport fails. We don’t normally see the GRID:X,Y values.

Whatever, this is a really nice fix for OS users.

This version of Kokua updates to use the SL Viewer code base 3.6.6 which has materials fixes.

There are about a dozen other fixes/features. See: Kokua-3-6-6 is released

Kokua Viewer 3.6.3 Released

WARNING! If you are a Windows user, avoid grabbing a copy and just installing it. That will create problems. Read the notice on the blog. Some things have changed and this install must be done differently than in the past. See: Kokua 3.6.3. Once you have made an update to 3.6.3 the installs will work correctly… or so we think.

The problem comes from the Kokua Dev Team incorporating Automatic Updates. The addition required a renaming of the install folder from Kokua Viewer to just Kokua. A basic install will result in having two versions of Kokua installed.
