Qarl Linden Departure/Layoff – Second Life Issues

(Update 2010-08-10) After Phillip Rosedale’s July 30th meeting many of us, while cautious, were more optimistic about the future of SL. Many things in this latest round of layoffs are puzzling and shaking our optimism. But, none are more puzzling and disconcerting than the layoff of Qarl after the 30th meeting. In this article I’m writing about what I have learned about issues in and changes coming to SL and comparing Phillip’s talk with his walk.

Much of what was said Friday the 30th comes under questioning with the subsequent layoff of Qarl. The reason for that is the contribution Qarl was making to SL. How can a company that has a highly productive employee, that apparently consistently solves complex problems with innovative solutions, be released if the company is about fixing problems? This is sort of like a coach with the best pitcher in the league claiming he is going to concentrate on a pitching game and then trading off the pitcher… everyone is going, “WTF?”

KirstenLee S20 (31) Released

This release is mostly about stability. Not much new to talk about. See: S20 Build 31 ( Back from Holiday Special ) I’ve gotten to use this version for several hours now. It seems more stable than my SL 2.1 and Emerald 2439. I’ve been visiting high lag places (NWN’s popular places) and it does … Read more

Second Life and Phillip’s Friday Meeting

On Friday July 30, 2010 Phillip Rosedale, Second Life founder, held an in world meeting to talk about the new direction and focus of Second Life and what residents can expect. RL work kept me away. I’m reading the blogs to see what went on and what people think. I wrote my reaction to some of those posts, then watched the meeting’s video. This article starts out some of my thoughts in reaction to others comments. After the title After the Video I provide a point by point summary with time marks on the video . So if you are interested in a single topic you can see if it is in the video and jump to the right spot in the video.

See the Meeting

First, you can see the video of the meeting on Treet.tv. See: Inworld Meeting with Philip Linden and BK Linden – It runs an hour long. Massively and New World Notes link to it. Massively’s   Tateru Nino provides an analysis of the event. In this case I read analyses  before watching the video. Sort of gives me something to listen for and relate things to. I provided time marks so you can watch just the parts pertinent to you.

Transcript is available on Treet.tv.

Second Life Lost Inventory and Missing Inventory Fix – Help

With the recent release of several new viewers and the server software updates, many people are having lost inventory problems and avatars not rez’ing. There are some basic fixes that correct apparent or perceived lost inventory. There is a difference between apparently lost and really lost inventory. I’ll cover the ‘apparently lost’ and how to restore your inventory. Read the entire article before you start doing things.

Updated 2010-08-06 & 3/2012 – References to the sidebar are from SL Viewer 2.x. There is no sidebar in SL Viewer 3.+. The sidebar references indicate opening Inventory.

Simple Lost Inventory Fix

First we’ll assume your inventory is just ‘apparently’ lost. So, you are not seeing any of or some parts of your stuff in inventory. Linden Lab (LL) is changing how inventory works client side. Some of these changes seem to be confusing to older viewers and various versions. So, if you are switching back and forth between the 1.23.x and SL 2.x viewers you are very likely to have some inventory problems. If you just updated, you may have some problems. If you are an Emerald user you are very likely to have inventory issues.

KirstenLee Viewer s20(30) Released – Review

Today I see Kirsten has a new S20 (30) release out. I’ll get around to trying it out later today.

Update 7/29 – I got to use the viewer. It has a really nice render. Things look better than normal.

There are several under the hood improvements. No black screens as I change settings. I only had to re-log once as I tried out the shadows settings. Plus I have a tiny bit better FPS rate.

The search dialog has been fixed so Classified ads show now. I actually use that from time to time. Search has changed. The search modifiers in the drop down list have changed to four tabs; Search, Events, Destination Guide, and Classifieds. The Maturity settings look like they can be enabled in search, they can’t. One has to enable them in Preferences -> [General]. One can then disable and enable Maturity classes for any search.
