ToS Update 2013-39

Hamlet Au has an article up on New World Notes about longtime creators removing their products from Second Life. This is because of the change in the terms of service. See: Longtime Second Life Content Creators Remove SL Work in Protest Over Linden Lab’s New Draconian Terms of Service.

Removing content is one of the actions I pointed out in my article: Second Life ToS Change. Now we’ll see how many people follow the Odd Fellows.

Is the new TOS having any effect on you?

If your merchant are you still uploading new content?

Hamlet quotes Nerad Oddball saying, “‘Oh, but we wouldn’t really [take your content]!’ doesn’t rate.” There’s some tricky quotes there.

Nerad makes the same point I did in my article. What happens if Second Life is sold for some reason? The new buyer will see all the stuff in SL as there’s. And they can do with it whatever they want to court in this current TOS.

So the BIG question is; why won’t the lab put back in the clause that makes this a limited license? Hamlet says he’s asking. I doubt were going to hear real answer, at least one we want to hear.

There are now 15 screens of entries in the SL forum thread: Updated LL TOS Claims FULL RIGHTS to ALL CONTENT.

Second Life news 2013-39 #2

Andrew Linden says, “I’ve been working on some Interest List fixes, the final fixes… (I hope).” He says he has been working on speeding up scene loading. That work should make it into an RC in a couple of weeks.

Server Scripting Meeting 2013-39

With the new server release has come some new reports of vehicle crossing problems. Right now there’s only one or two reports. The problems are not generally repeatable. They happen then stop happening. If you’re seeing problems that continue, file a JIRA bug report.

More Oculus Rift 2013-39

Jo Yardley has another article up about the OculusRift. See: Solving virtual User Interface problems. She’s on about User Interface problems. The article includes a video that shows some of the aspects of the User Interface problems.

But there is a funny video out that shows and even more serious problem. Check this out:

It is obvious balance is going to be a problem. Sixense’s STEM where you wear four motion detectors and stand up has the potential for injury. Jo mentions dancing. That REALLY seems to have the potential for injury. Even if you use the OMNI treadmill dancing would seem to be a problem. Without the Rift I have enough problems dancing when wearing heels and drinking spiced rum.

Fixed Again

Well, it’s fixed again. Most of the time fixing this problem was spent in setting up a test frame. I had to get MySQL set up. Then get PHP set up. Then install Apache HTTP server. Then get those integrated. It has been probably three years since I set these up last. Lots has changed.

Then I found out that WordPress has import and export problems. My blog’s database is only about 13 MB. Depending on your web host, max file size for an upload via WordPress import/export is 2 to 10 MB.

Most of the web tutorials that show how these things are set up are way out of date now. So, I had to figure out all the bugs and gotchas and clean those up before I could even start looking for my problem. Whatever, now have a working test frame.

Once I had the test frame, it didn’t take very long to find the problem and get it fixed. It seems the new WordPress and my theme don’t get along very well. So, I’ve got some sections that apparently need to be rewritten. Or… Maybe I’ll just make a new theme.

Broke Again

As Pandora Wriggleswort pointed out the articles are not printing when pulled up. I was playing with a new plugin yesterday. But, removing it has not resolved the problem. I have backups of my theme. Restoring it hasn’t fixed it. So, I’m still tracking down the problem.

Since a different theme works, I’ll have this one up until I figure out what happened.

I haven’t moved my test frame for themes over to my Win7 setup. So, this may take some time. Or I may adapt a new responsive design to my site. I’ve been thinking about it.

Second Life News 2013-39

This week the package that ran on Magnum last week is moving to the main channel. The Magnum package is a composite of new stuff and the stuff running on Blue Steel and Le Tigre.

This package has the fixes for; llXorBase64(),llReturnObjectsByID(),llJsonSetValue(), and parcel access. A new feature is a change so that some parcel rezzers will be caught by parcel return. The last one is a shot at griefers.

RC Channels

All the RC channels will be running the same package that is running on the main channel. This usually happens when server packages have not successfully made it through the Lab’s QA process.

I am guessing that Wednesday’s restarts of the RC channel regions will happen today. But, may be not.
