Yay! Torley. There is a new wiki page up telling you how to see the DoF effect. You will need a pretty hot graphics card. My nVidia 8800 GTS will do it. Rather than tell you more about DoF, visit the wiki page for videos by residents and the Torley tutorial. Depth of Field Wiki … Read more
The minutes from Mesh Office Hours Meeting are out. This time they were placed on the blogrum as well as the Wiki. See Mesh Office Hours 10-25-2010 for the full transcript. I’ve covered the parts I think are interesting.
Things have changed, so some links here have been changed to newer support pages. (4/20/2011)
We now have some new phone numbers for the Lab (5/23/2011)
We now have a Linden.Lab profile we can contact. SeeLinden.Lab. 10m/11d/2011. (More info below)
I see lots of posts in the Second Life Forum that are directed at Linden Lab staff. I suppose those people think staff or someone in staff reads the forum and gets information to where it can do something. As best I can tell that does not happen. If you want your voice heard, here are some tips for getting that to happen.
Even if you are not an Imprudence user this is an important read.
The Imprudence team has a new release of the Experimental (Imprudence beta) viewer out. The building tools in Imprudence continue to improve. Also the Imprudence site is doing a good job of listing the changes in each new release. Rather than repeat that information here I think I’ll just touch on the changes I find interesting.
Updated 1/2012: New code in the release channels is causing login issues, basic ghosting where the system thinks you are already logged in. The official fix is call support. I suggest you read on for steps you can take.
Original October 2010 Article
Due to a timing issue in the region software we are seeing people fail to properly log out. The result is they leave a ghost behind, not a particle ball, more the spooky kind of ghost we expect to see for Halloween. I’ve seen lots of people making this complaint recently. The Beta Server and QA teams are aware of the problem and they are chasing it down.
The problem results in one’s avatar being left behind somewhere in-world when you logout. It causes a user to show in the system as already logged on, thus preventing them from logging into Second Life.
Over time I’ve decided this is not a viewer problem, at least not a specific viewer. It does not seem to matter which viewer one uses. A poor Internet connection greatly increases your chances of experiencing the problem.
I cam across this tip in the SL blogrum. Help! I messed up my sculpty-mesh Gaia Clary, of Machinimatrix.org, commented on the problem. Gaia does great tutorials and clear explanations. Donations at Machinimatrix.org are appreciated and split between Gaia and Domino.
With the new 2.x viewers in Second Life lots has changed. Editing one’s appearance is one of the big changes. I have yet to decide of it is better or worse. Whichever, it certainly is different. This is my attempt to sort out how appearance works. I expect the viewer to change quite a bit over the next few weeks.
Getting into the Editor
In the 1.x viewers (SLV1) it was easy to find the editor, just right-click the avatar and select Edit Appearance. Everything is there. I guess it could be intimidating.
In the Second Life 2.x viewers (SLV2) the logic for getting into Appearance Edit changes. The process is more goals oriented. For techie types familiar with computers the idea that one wants to change a dress or their shape means look for an avatar editor. Less geeky types probably don’t think of looking for an avatar editor, they just want to change the dress. The Lab did usability testing and supposedly this was a significant problem. I just don’t know.
Update: 2013-08-20 – Server Side Appearance rolled out to the main grid today. The avatar bake process described here is no longer in use. It will take some time to see if the problem is completely solved or whether more removed causes prevent avatar rendering in the future. Search this blog for bake fail to find newer articles. This blog uses an enhanced search tool. Update: 2010-09-30 – added tidbits of information – Update 2010-10-04 – added links
See the date to the right for the latest update. I come back and add new info and update existing information from time to time.
Second Life Avatar Ghost
This problem seems to have become a recent epidemic (2010). There are a number of reasons for why now. I suspect people are more interested in how to fix it and get their avatar rendered. Here is the information I have come across.
