Phoenix Viewer 1.5.2.977 Beta

Phoenix Viewer
Phoenix Viewer 977

It seems a number of people have been having trouble running the Phoenix Viewer 908. Some users crash after a few minutes and some after a longer time. The Phoenix team has been looking for the problem. This Beta release is a step in confirming they have found the problem. They need more testers on many different type of hardware to test the viewer. So, it you are one of those that has had problems with Phoenix crashing, get the new 977 and give it try. If you crash, file a report on the Phoenix JIRA.

Download & Install

The release announcement advises us that this install will clear the cache. For most of us that just means you may notice your first login rez taking just a bit longer.

Windows users have a choice between an SSE and an SSE2 viewer. To know which your computer will use the Phoenix Wiki SSE page links you to a handy tool that examines your computer and checks what type of SSE support it has. SSE2 is better than SSE. Newly made computers support SSE4. Two year old computers probably support SSE3. So, don’t sell your computer short, just check it.

Imprudence Viewer Experimental Release 2011.03.11

The Imprudence team has just released a new version of the Imprudence Viewer. This is still 1.4 version of the viewer. The imprudence web site lists the changes and fixes and this version of the viewer. See: Imprudence Experimental Release

Download & Install

The download is about 35mb. The announcement warns that they have had some problems with this installer program. It worked for me. If you have a problem with the install see the fix on the Imprudence site.

This version has the option to associate SLURL’s with the Imprudence viewer, a nice touch. It is common to  find the SLURL’s associated with the last viewer installed. For more information on associating SLURL’s with a viewer see: Emerald Viewer vs SLURL

Second Life Viewer 2.5.1 (222867) Update

I haven’t been writing much about the SL Viewer. Most of the work is on boring techie stuff. Things that have to be done and make the viewer work better, but they are difficult to explain. A couple of things stand out that are somewhat interesting.

Version Numbers

You may or may not have noticed that the Development viewer version numbering changed. We were up to 2.7.0-222124 (dated: 2/26/11) and today we are on 2.5.1-222867 (3/7/11). This could be confusing for some when reading JIRA’s about bugs found in the Development viewer.

SL Community Roles or Ranks Explained

SL Community Role Icons

The new SL Community Web Site has roles, or ranks. Mine is ‘Honored Resident’… which sounds kinda nice. It does make me wonder if they have one for AH or DS… for my opposite. 😛  Probably not. Whatever, we do have roles now. Apparently one’s role or rank determines what one can do in the SL Community Web Site.

The SL Community now has a series of roles to recognize users who contribute content valued by the community. I’m not sure how much the community contributes to one’s rank or how they do that. There is a FAQ on the subject here: Roles and Ranks

OpenSim Astra Viewer Review

Astra Viewer
Astra Viewer

The main developer of Astra Viewer is Siana Gearz. (See comments for a correction) Posting in SLUniverse’s forum Siana wrote:

Oh and never mind my fork of Astra, forget it, it’s for private OpenSim/AuroraSim installation only, It’s a special purpose version of Imprudence.

Siana was writing in a thread about the Singularity Viewer to answer someone question about Astra. If you have questions about Astra, contact Siana.

So, Astra is not a Second Life Viewer or at least not intended for use on the SL Grids.

For OpenSim Use

If you are playing or working on OpenSim then download a copy of Astra. Astra Viewer Download (broken) Update: Astra Viewer Download (from Google 11/2011) which eventually leads to a Singularity Viewer download.

USE: Astra Viewer Download (1.6.0.2) – See: Astra Viewer 1.6.0.2 Download Review

The web site is mostly empty. Update: 11/2011 the site is gone.
