Imprudence-Kokua News

The head of the Imprudence-Kokua Viewer Project, Jacek Antonelli, is… retiring. He has posted an announcement to that effect in the Kokua and Imprudence blog. See: Moving On.

It is difficult to predict how the Kokua-Imprudence project will change after his departure. I am not involved in the inner circles of the team… or for that matter even in the outer circles. I’m just another fan of the Imprudence viewer. So, I can only speculate. My guesses would not even be well informed.

Whatever becomes of Kokua-Imprudence I wish Jacek Antonelli all the best and thanks for all the fish.

Second Life Viewer Non-Update Week 30

I often use the SLV Development viewer. I’m on one of the version 2.8.3 builds. So, I have a sense of how well it is or is not working. But, that tells me nothing about planning for the viewer. For that information I rely on the Office Hour or as it is now called the Viewer Evolution User Group meeting. Recently that meeting has not been happening. Actually for the last two weeks the Lindens are not showing up. This group was one of the most informative and communicative. Now it is one of the worse if not the worst. So, it is hard to know what is going on with the Linden Lab viewer.

Viewers to be Blocked

Opensource Obscure noticed in the wiki a note in the 2.8.0 viewer release notes about versions of the SLViewer 2 series being blocked. Viewers from version 2.1.1 to version 2.6.8 will be blocked at logon. As the Lindens have promised the 1.23.x viewers are excluded and will be able to login.

I think there are enough code changes and new features in Second Life that one needs a 2.7 or better viewer to get the most out of SL. The blocked viewers are using support services that will likely be turned off in the coming days.

#SL 2.8 Inventory Delay

Since I installed some version of the 2.8 series viewers I have had inventory lag. There is about a 2 or 3  second delay for every click I try to make in the inventory panel. Even the scroll-bar has a delay. It is very annoying.

Today in the Mesh Volunteer group someone said, ‘Clear your settings and that will go away.’ I tried it and it worked. Now the delay seems to be permanently gone.

The same trick is supposed to work with Kirsten’s Viewer. I’ll try it later today.

Clearing Settings

Your settings are kept in an XML file. On Windows look in: C:\Users\[windows_login_name]\AppData\Roaming\SecondLife\user_settings\[viewer file name]

The file name for the main SL Viewer is settings.xml. If you use any project, development, or beta viewers there will be multiple settings files. Make sure you get the right one. They have names that make it obvious which file goes with which viewer.

Slow Rez

Some time ago there was a round of viewer versions that were slow rez’n things and avatars. That problem is back in the Development viewer. Second Life 2.8.3 (237080) Jul 28 2011 04:22:42 (Second Life Development) After 5 minutes most of the avatars around me still have not rezzed. Ping=100 to 150, Packet Loss=0%…

Kirsten 1st Place Stable

The Third Party Viewer (TPV) List is ordered on crash rates. To day the list was updated and Kirsten’s Viewer is the top TPV. The Lab’s 1.23 version viewer is still the most stable viewer. But, it is a very obsolete viewer. Kirsten’s is the cutting edge viewer. That its crash rate is less than the SLV 2.7 viewers is impressive.

Kirsten Viewer S21(9) Released Review

A couple of days ago KirstenLee released a new version of the S21 Kirsten Viewer (KV). I’m just getting around to installing and testing it.

Download & Install

The file size for download is about 32mb. I’m late downloading so the download cue is  empty and the download is quick.

The install is the typical KV install. It removes the previous S21 install and then installs the new version. In some version updates the uninstall has not worked all that well. I start out trusting it will do everything correctly. I save the install file so that I can uninstall, wipe the folders and reinstall if necessary.

After several hours of use the install without a manual file cleaning seems to work.

Second Life Camera Position Tips

Some time ago I found a camera control Debug Setting I now change in all my viewers. I’ve mentioned it in several of my viewer reviews. Recently I read an article by Penny Patton and learned some more about changing the camera position and view. That inspired me to take another look at camera settings in the Series 2 viewers. Here is what I’ve learned and what may make your SL experience better.

Shopping with a New Perspective

Above is an image that shows my default view when shopping. You might notice I’m not staring at the floor. I did not have to cam around to get the view. I can press ESC a couple of times and come back to this camera position at any time.

This shopping area is in a region named Diesel and an area named The Island of Milk & Cream. It is an Adult area. Knowing that the idea of Milk & Cream takes on new meaning. The creativity and skill of the builder, Penny Patton, is obvious. So, is the humor. Notice the ad for It Figures, shapes for the top heavy.
