Second Life Display Names

There is soooo much misinformation out about Display Names. I think it also reveals how few Second Life residents actually know how to research anything about SL. That they are willing to post their imaginings, without any checking, in forums and blogs is even more … choose your own adjective here. Sheeesh…

Jessica Lyons wrote a post on the Phoenix Viewer web site/blog that does a good job of getting the facts stated clearly. She provides good information on how to use them in world and for logging into the web sites and grid. She covers how to use older series 1 viewers with the new Display Names. She also points out the eventual coming end to Phoenix Viewers as they move to their series 2 viewer Firestorm Viewer.

Also if you use the URL http://www.phoenixviewer.com you may find the URL http://phoenixviewer.blogspot.com/ much nicer to use. The first URL cannot be added to an RSS subscription. The second one can.

Dolphin Viewer 1.5.37.3627 (?New? Yes) Released

The Dolphin Viewer (3627) has been updated to use Display Names and fix several general SL problems. The version number did not change. However, in Help -> About the version date did change, Nov 21 2010 13:50:52 (Dolphin Viewer).

Also a problem encountered when using the viewer on OpenSim has been fixed. Several viewers would crash when double clicking a texture while on OpenSim. The problem was also found in several other viewers including the SLV2.

In some viewers there has been a problem with the viewer crashing if you turn your avie in a 360 degree turn, spinning in place. Swinging the viewer to see new areas can cause crashes. Dolphin does NOT have that problem.

Second Life Server Software Updates

Tuesdays and Wednesdays, depending on your region, the server’s software is updated and the region restarted. New versions are rolled out early morning. On Tuesday it is the new Production version that is rolled out. On Wednesday a new Release Candidate is rolled out to the test regions. The Tuesday process takes between 4 and 5 hours.

The changes just rolled out and upcoming changes are discussed in Server Beta Office Hours. Here are the things I found interesting from the latest Server Beta office hours. One is a big one for builders.

The Phoenix team is doing a Phoenix Hour on Rezzed.TV. One gets lots of good information. It does take an hour and there are commercials. All in all rezzed.TV does a good show. You should check one out. Here I’ve included some of the points that interested me.

Phoenix Viewer Top Issues

There are 4 main support issues the Phoenix Support team is seeing. The main one they named ‘Bake Fail’. The symptoms are you appearing nude to yourself or others when you are dressed. Also, when changing cloths you look OK to yourself but to others you are still wearing the previous clothes.

Imprudence to Kokua Changeover

An announcement has been posted on the Imprudence Blog that the weekend of November 21 they will be changing to their new name, Kokua. They say this will mean the Imprudence web site will be down. I suppose gone is more accurate.

Related sites like the forum, wiki, and download will remain up but it is unclear which URL will get you to them and when. However, they plan to implement domain forwarding so you should end up in the right place.

They say the login ID/passwords for the forum and wiki will remain the same. If you use ‘Remember Me’ cookies to login, those are going to break. Domain name changes do that. You should probably check that you still know your password.

Second Life Viewer 2.3.0 Released

Today Linden Lab’s Jack Linden posted the new standard viewer is now version 2.3.0-214726. Logging on I find it is not yet mandatory for 2.2.0 users. Those using 1.23 and TPV’s will be able to continue using those viewers. However, because Display Names are part of this release how one uses the 3 input fields in older viewers is now an issue.

Installing

The download is really fast. The file is still 24mb and my connection has not changed, according to my speed tests, so the Lindens have done something different.

UPDATE
Many people are having a problem getting this version to run. To make sure it works, uninstall all your SL Viewers, Beta, Development, Projects, and previous SLV2 version. I don’t plan to ever use the 1.23 again so I removed it too. Manually remove all the SL Viewer related folders (local, roaming, and program files). Install 2.3.0 and then reinstall the Beta or any other SL Viewers you use and it should work.
