MetaReality with the Exodus Viewer Team

MetaReality did an interview with members of the Exodus Viewer Team. It is presented as a PODCast. I’m curious about viewers and the teams that make them, so I had to check it out. Following is my take on the interview. I’ve included time marks so you can jump to parts of the interview you may be interested in. The PODCast runs 1 hour 15 minutes.

Metareality Podcasts

Exodus Team; Clix Diesel, the voice of Exodus Viewer and project lead, Ash Qin is Exodus’ Linux developer and owns and runs the popular Sci-Fi sim Deshima, Geenz Spad is Exodus’ graphics guy, and Ayamo Nozaki (not present on the podcast) is the lead developer for Exodus.

0:00 – 3:45 – Introductions, we gotta know the players.

3:34 – 4:00 – Clix talks a little about the direction of the Exodus Viewer Development. Mostly that it is targeted at the SL gamers. I take that to mean those that play in the combat SIM’s. They probably take a broader view, but they are from a hardcore combat group in SL.

#SL Market Place Woes

Darrius Gothy writes about the Second Life Market Place problem of delayed delivery. It seems starting at midnight Pacific Time deliveries take 30 minutes to 5 or 6 hours to deliver. You can imagine how happy that makes everyone.

30 Day Summary of the Web Project

Darrius explains that slow delivery leads to other problems. Not the least of which is user frustration and overall poor impression of SL. You can read his post here: Slow Spiral Into Demise.

The delivery problems are reported in JIRA item: WEB-4260 – SLM deliveries consistently delayed in early morning hours. The JIRA was filed November 11, 2011. It has only 72 watches, so the Lindens are not going to get too excited about it. (Still more votes than watches. It is amazing how hard it to get the word around about WATCH being the important click.)

#SL Server News Wk4 Update

The reason no new code rolled to main grid was because of problems with the diagonal region crossings code. The code failed because the utility servers in AGNI were running an older version of their software than the utility servers for ADITI. The utility servers have been updated, the diagonal crossing code has more fixes and all are now in testing in the release channels.

Can’t Login

We have been seeing a number of requests for help with ‘Can’t Login’ in the SL Forum. It seems this is caused by a problem in the region crossing code. The Linden answer to the problem for now is call support. I suggest you run through the steps here: I Can’t Login. With any luck the fix should roll to a release channel next week… but, I was a little confused on the issue. It may only be in the release channels that this problem has come up. In which case the roll to the release channels will solve the problem and it will never be rolled to the main grid.

#SL Bare Feet

SL Mesh Feet
Mesh Feet w/Deformer On

I was asked to help a person get some bare feet working with their Xcite Feet. The person was about 6 months old. First we had to get past lots of confusion. She had ideas about what Xcite was going to do and what bare feet are. The problems I ran into trying to get things sorted out show several reasons people probably give up on Second Life. Whatever that case is, I learned a lot about bare feet, which is what this article is about.

Status Update Mesh Deformer

Qarl posted a new video on his blog to update us on the Mesh Deformer. Qarl says thanks for your support. He points out that he does not have the time to answer everyone’s questions on all the forums he reads. He has noticed several problems with the Deformer being discussed and provided in the feedback.

Body Poking Through

All the cases he has seen these are problems of having used the wrong beginning avatar. If one designed over size clothes for an over sized avatar, then the deformer will make the clothes twice as big. The same problem happens going the other way toward tiny avatars, but twice as small.

Deformer Complcations

Base Avatar

The base avatar to use is the one you get when you create a new default female shape. Domino and Gaia both provide copies of that avatar.
