Second Life News 2013-4

It looks like we won’t have a rollout this Tuesday. Last week the RC rollouts had to be rolled back. That happened on Friday. Neither of the two candidates passed.

Monday is a holiday for some in the USA, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. We can include Linden Lab in that group. So, there is not much news out about exactly what went wrong.

It seems that in the Magnum RC regions the regions were falling off the World Map.

Apparently the other regions with the Interest List improvements were crashing at a high enough rate to alarm the Lindens.

Whatever, they all got rolled back. So, I assume the entire grid is running the code from the Main Release channel.

We should get some news from the Server-Scripting group meeting Tuesday.

Second Life and Collada Files

Gaia Clary
Gaia Clary

Since the release of mesh Second Life™ users have been dealing with Collada files. Of all the various important export formats that could be used, Collada shows the most promise. But, it is not a format that retail software vendors tend to support. It is mostly open source. So, we have not seen great support for Collada. It seems we are going to get a Collada boost.

Gaia Clary, Machinimatrix.org, has been working with the Blender developers to get better Collada export/import capabilities. That has paid off as Bender.org was on the verge of dropping support for Collada from lack of interest. Now we are seeing better Collada support in each release of Blender.

LOKI vs CHUI Good Review

If you have not yet tried the Chat Hub User Interface (CHUI) take a look at Loki’s review: LOKI vs CHUI.

I like first users’ impressions of things. Nice review and lots of pictures of the interface as it is now.

Loki’s opinion of it and how he does nearby and group chat and IM’s is interesting. His feeling that he is likely to change how he has been doing chat to get the benefits of the new CHUI speaks well of the new interface.

Metareality Podcast 2013-3

Yay! We have another podcast released this week. Karl Stiefvater (Qarl Fizz, formerly Qarl Linden) talks about the Mesh Deformer. This week’s podcast is titled: Transformational Change. They should have added a dash and the word NOT.

The cast only runs 45 minutes or so, if you want to listen to it. Otherwise, check out my summary of the podcast.

As always I write my take on what was said, which may have nothing to do with what was actually said. So, if you react negatively to something you read, listen to the audio.

Second Life Limits

The Lab has a ‘Second Life LIMITS’ page in the wiki. It is a handy reference for a number of things. I missed that in December 2012 the page was getting revisions and has been for a time. The page has had a number of updates and new information added.

Updated Second Life Limits Page

This is a page editable by the community. In December Perrie Juran made some changes. In November Ibrew Meads, Kireji Haiku, Darien Caldwell, Uccello Poultry,  and Stickman Ingmann were making changes. If you look through the page’s history there are some well known names contributing to the Wiki.

Second Life Development Viewer 3.4.6 Released

A new version of the Development Viewer came out yesterday: 3.4.6 (269073) Jan 15 2013. I figured this would be a good viewer to use for testing the Interest List improvements running in Blue Steel and Le Tigre RC channels. It is an interesting change.

To try the Interest List you need to find a shop in an RC region (Second Life RC LeTigre 13.01.04.268719). I tried:

  • Farstone – Prim build shop.
  • Mayfair – An all Mesh build region with mesh clothes shops.

Then I compared to a standard region in the main channel without the Interest List improvements.

  • Heels – The N-core shop – A prim build.

I find it interesting that this viewer is running at 15 to 75 FPS and probably averaging in the 30 to 40 FPS range. It did that in all three regions. I’m running one setting under ULTRA with Draw Distance at 128m.
