Mesh Deformer Update 2013-2

There isn’t much happening on this project. But, there is lots of talk. Oz Linden is talking with management about assigning staff to the project. That discussion should be happening this Friday. Next week we will learn whether he got the help he wants.

Jeans without Alpha Layer

In the mean time new people have been posting in the JIRA item STORM-1716Mesh Deformer for tailoring mesh clothing. This has become a rather large JIRA entry. So, users are getting hit with the problem the Lindens had, the thread is just too long to read. The result is important information is over looked by the people just joining the discussion. They are clueless and that annoys those that have followed the project for the last year. That results in lots of bickering and short tempers.

The thread is a good example of why the Lindens made the JIRA Change and closed down the BUG Reports and JIRA in general. Just try to get the latest information out of the 1716 thread. It is a pain and it doesn’t work. I read the thing because I want to distill the information out, know what is happening, and hopefully keep my readers informed.  Continue reading

Mesh and Other Upload Crashes

There is an odd gotcha or two in the mesh Upload process. One is from cloud storage programs. If one has Skydrive or a similar software installed it can be nearly impossible to upload mesh without crashing. Some times deleting the SLM file in the folder with the Collada DAE file can solve the problem.

Another problem is the file selection window stalls the viewer. If you take too long to open a file for upload, you may be disconnected. Since the file dialog stalls the viewer, the server sees you as disconnected. At some point the server times out the connection for no activity and disconnects you.

Mesh upload does NOT have the time problem other types of asset upload have. So, you may get disconnected uploading a texture but not a mesh. On the other hand your Skydrive will crash you on a mesh upload but, may be not with a texture.

It can be confusing trying to figure out what is happening. You have to look in the viewer log to figure out which crash is biting you.

#SL Mesh Upload Problem

Some people have run into a problem uploading mesh. There is a JIRA filed on the problem: SH-3055[PUBLIC] Cannot upload any model (*.dae) file; “xxx failed to upload, see the log file for details”.

There is a fix making its way through QA. See the preliminary build in Simon’s repository: 266471. I understand this version has a fix by Runitai Linden. Some other issues in that build have kept it from merging with the Development or Beta braches. Until the other problems are resolved this fix is a bit jammed up.

If you are having mesh upload problem, try the viewer and provide feedback on the JIRA. I can’t tell which JIRA’s are open to basic JIRA users. But, I think this one is open to general users. If not, email Alexa Linden and mention SH-3055.

You probably know viewers can update quickly. The viewer provided  above (266471) is linked to via a static link. The newest version from that repo is here: Latest Simon II. I haven’t read the branch notes so I’m not sure the new versions are better for mesh upload. As the Lindens are likely to experiment with adding and removing fixes to find problems you just can’t know without reading the notes. Even then it may be impossible to tell exactly what is going on as these notes are often likely meant only for those making them. But, it may be worth a try.

#SL Best Practices

Jeremy Linden has been working on the Second Life(TM) wiki, the Best Practices for building, mesh, animation, and more. Check out the main page: Good Building Practices.

Revised Wiki Page

This page covers all the aspects of building or making just about anything in Second Life. If you are building with mesh, check this out. It covers several aspects of reducing Land Impact costs.

I would say the place is being spruced up for the coming entry into Steam. Whatever, it is nice to the wiki updating.

#SL LIQUID MESH is it a Real Solution?

JD Lewellyn tipped me about an announcement by RicoRacer Flux about a new release of mesh clothes named: LIQUID MESH. The release is timed for today, December 1, 2012. The basic take away is: Good but over hyped.

Redgrave Store

According to the announcement:

Really simple! Our new LIQUID MESH products automatically adjust to your body shape! That means no more changes to your shape needed!

But we went even further. The mesh also follows certain body shape sliders. That means you can even kind of resize our products along with your shape which is not possible with any other mesh till now.

…with LIQUID MESH you can adjust your mesh now also with sliders for:

Body Fat

Legs:
– Leg Muscles
– Butt Size
– Saddle Bags
– Knee Angle
– Foot Size (to change pants cuffs width)

Oddly they did not include a link to their store. I forget links too, so I won’t complain too much. I’ll just be more determined to try and remember to put my links in my articles.

#SL Mesh Deformer New Twist

Take-Away – It is possible to animate the face of a mesh avatar using the Deformer. The details follow:

White Rabbit

Yesterday after the Server Beta meeting White Rabbit showed me a full body avatar. It’s eyes blinked. I mean blinked like the SL Avatar blinks. The eyelids moved. Now that is novel.

Now that may not seem like much, but if you have made avatars with mesh heads, you know that the face cannot be animated to show expressions as the SL Avatar can. What White Rabbit is discovering is that the Mesh Deformer in the current Project Viewer is handling the facial morphs used for expression.

I didn’t get to see all that White Rabbit has discovered as the region we were in on ADITI kept crashing and restarting. But, I did find what I saw impressive.
