Direct Delivery Beta Post

Commerce Team Linden posted the following:

The Direct Delivery Beta on Aditi launches today [Jan 10, 2012] (Aditi is the Beta grid and testing will not impact production). If you would like to try out Direct Delivery please see the Direct Delivery Instructions and the Beta Release Notes on the wiki. These instructions include pointers to Knowledge Base articles and ways to provide feedback.

You can read the announcement and about users experiences in the SL Forum. Direct Delivery Beta Launch.

We may see Direct Delivery arrive in the first quarter.

#SL Failed Deliveries

Whether you are a merchant or a shopaholic failed deliveries are a PITA. Darrius Gothly has a post in the SL Forum (A New Theory Why The Shopping Cart Causes “Failed Deliveries”) about failed deliveries and what might be done to improve things. A quick summary follows.

Concept

Darrius has the idea that we may not be have a higher rate of failed deliveries, but only a perceived higher rate. It is like not having a TV, so you don’t know about all the storms around the world. You get a TV and hear about them and suddenly start thinking there are more storms than ever. It is not the weather that changed, it is you intake of information that changed. You are now aware of what is going on.

Darrius explains how the shopping cart in the Market Place (MP) has changed the information flow so that we see more delivery failures. We personally have no increase in failures, but merchant reporting tells us about more failures and raises our awareness.

#SL Direct Delivery

We have an approximate roll out date. This feature is expected to hit the grid this summer, first in Beta and within a couple of months the final version. It is down to weeks. So, what is Direct Delivery?

Direct Delivery is a new way to deliver products to residents in SL. We will have 2 folders in inventory. One folder for receiving items we buy and one for items we want to sell in the SL Market Place.

Arriving new purchases will arrive in the receiving folder. That will be nice. I don’t know how many times I’ve had to hunt for new delivery.

The Magic Box, now used to put products into the SL Market Place, will eventually be replaced and vanish. For a time both can be used.

Brooke Linden promises more information two weeks before Direct Delivery Beta goes live. Watch the Commerce Forum for more information. There is currently a live thread there now with several questions asking for clarification on various things. No answers yet.

Several people have asked forward thinking questions that didn’t occur to me.  Check them out and add any you may have.

I’m curious how this will affect real estate in SL. Merchants will no longer need a place in SL to park their Magic Boxes. That would seem to reduce the need for land in SL. I guess we’ll see.

SL Market Place – Direct Delivery

Everyone has had trouble with the Market Place’s delivery system failing. Plus the in-world magic boxes have been an annoying pain. Moving them is a pain. Having a place for them is a drag. Well, things are going to change.

You may have heard that our inventory starts to have problems when we exceed more than 250 or so items in a folder. As the inventory API changes that soft limit is changing to something like 10,000 items per folder. That could be part of the change to support Direct Delivery.

Merchants: Rule Change

Linden Lab has announced a change in how brands will be treated in SL. New World Notes (NWN) writes about it and provides some links for more information in “Unbranded: Lindens To Ban Unauthorized Virtual Copies of Real World Brands on Ecommerce Site”. The Linden Lab announcement is here: Updates to XStreet SL Listing Guidelines.

There is a small conversation in the comments at NWN. There is a large conversation going on in the XStreetSL Forum. See: New Guidelines Forum Thread There is also another thread of conversations here: Chat About XStreet SL Listing Guidelines In the Chat there are several clarifications on subjects beyond just branding issues. Also, Pink Linden states there is a group of Lindens working on the same issues in-world. So, we will likely see this rule change coming into the SL world.
