#SL Fixes Purchase Delivery

A JIRA was filed, WEB-4260SLM deliveries consistently delayed in early morning hours. It raised some heat. Darrius wrote in his blog about it: Slow Spiral Into Demise. Forum conversation picked up and some bloggers picked up on the problem. I wrote about it in: #SL Market Place Woes.

It seems the commotion got some action. Zanara Zenovka noticed a change and posted about it in: Shock! Horror! Instant deliveries?

Whatever was delaying early morning deliveries seems to have been fixed. In my previous article I speculated that WEB-4260 might not be fixed as it would take people away from the Direct Delivery project. Seems they either decided to give WEB-4260 some love while depriving DD or had other people available. We’ll likely never know which.

This fix should make the European users and all the merchants much happier.

#SL Market Place Problems

Market Place Problems

Those of us marketing items in the SL Market Place web site are having new problems. I saw where one merchant was suddenly finding a number of their items were ‘Unavailable’. This usually means a problem with one’s Magic Box. But, their box seemed to be working. I decided to check mine.

WEB-4152

WEB-4152 – Fewer listings are shown per page than my pagination settings should display, is a JIRA issue my Merchant’s Dashboard warned me about today. I don’t log into my Market Place Dashboard often. I am hoping some staff will get replaced and someone will come in and fix the Market Place.

I have my Inventory set to show 10 items. The list contains 8 items. Changing to 25 items I see 20 items displayed. I have 25 items.

However, if you click from page to page, you do see all your items. Items are NOT skipped. They just push to the next page. I wonder how complicated this feature can possibly be. Lists like this are a click in Dreamweaver.

#SL Direct Delivery in Testing

We don’t hear much from the Linden Commerce Team. But this week the new Direct Deliver system made it to the Release Channel in the main grid. We know because the Server team told us. It is currently testing in Le Tigre regions. That means there is a chance it will move to the main grid this coming Tuesday, if things go well.

As best I can tell the new features are not enabled. Visiting Le Tigre sandboxes I see none of the new folders needed for Direct Delivery in my inventory. Presumably this is a code compatibility test. They are checking to see if adding the code breaks anything else.

Also there are the other inventory services using HTTP Inventory. Those services are to make Inventory load faster and more reliably. I think new API’s are part of the deal too.  So, new viewers should see a speed up in inventory while in Le Tigre channel regions.

#SL Commerce News

It is never easy to know what is going on with the SL Commerce Team. One logs into their merchant’s dashboard and finds changes… That may be changing.

CommerceTeam Linden, a new Linden personality that is supposedly the team rep, posted that new release notes are being published in the SL Wiki. I suppose that means we won’t see updates in the forum. See Release Notes/Marketplace Current. This is supposed to be an ongoing thing. The updates there now have been made by Brooke Linden.

CommerceTeam Linden also posted this comment: Best ways to contact the Commerce Team. For those of us that have been around SL for some time it sounds familiar. Basically what is said is: post in the forum, we may notice and do something, but don’t count on it. Otherwise, file a support ticket or a JIRA. Well… isn’t that reassuring? We have a way to get something done… right.

OMG! Merchants Get Screwed?

I was surprised to find Darrius’ rip on Linden Lab’s Commerce Team this evening. I’m not surprised the Commerce Team released such a disaster. They tend to hide under their desks and it seems that behavior is catching up with them.

If you are a merchant selling in world or in the Market Place, your record keeping just turned into a feces flash mob.

Darrious Gothly posted the details in SL Marketplace Update Goes Sideways. It looks like a major failure in management and quality control.

Inara Pey posted SL Marketplace consternation. She covers several of the problems and provides links into the forum where the problems are being discussed.

I find it amazing that teams in the Lab do things so differently. Some teams have great relationships with residents, well, most residents. Others just seem clueless and have people carrying tar and features searching for them. The help the mesh team has received in getting mesh working is an example of a good feedback and testing loop. Too bad the Commerce Team doesn’t have something similar…

#SL Failed Deliveries

Whether you are a merchant or a shopaholic failed deliveries are a PITA. Darrius Gothly has a post in the SL Forum (A New Theory Why The Shopping Cart Causes “Failed Deliveries”) about failed deliveries and what might be done to improve things. A quick summary follows.

Concept

Darrius has the idea that we may not be have a higher rate of failed deliveries, but only a perceived higher rate. It is like not having a TV, so you don’t know about all the storms around the world. You get a TV and hear about them and suddenly start thinking there are more storms than ever. It is not the weather that changed, it is you intake of information that changed. You are now aware of what is going on.

Darrius explains how the shopping cart in the Market Place (MP) has changed the information flow so that we see more delivery failures. We personally have no increase in failures, but merchant reporting tells us about more failures and raises our awareness.

The Future of Commerce in Second Life

Those on the SLCC 2011 panel are; Jeff – Sr. Business Dev Strategy and Planning, Brook Linden – Merchant Services and owner of the Market Place, Thor Linden – Economic Overseer & Strategic Operations or SEARCH, Colossus Linden – Payment systems. Forgive me if I misspelled a name. Also, I never did catch Jeff’s avatar name.

The Commerce Team is hard to find. SL Groups Search from the web page is broken today. The Second Life Commerce Merchants group was apparently created for XStreetSL.  There is an SL Merchants Section in the SL Forum. In general this is a very hard team to find. As to feedback, you’ll have to chase down one of the team and see if you can get their attention. Brooke has the feed on her profile turned off… it looks like the do-not-disturb sign is up.

Merchants: Rule Change

Linden Lab has announced a change in how brands will be treated in SL. New World Notes (NWN) writes about it and provides some links for more information in “Unbranded: Lindens To Ban Unauthorized Virtual Copies of Real World Brands on Ecommerce Site”. The Linden Lab announcement is here: Updates to XStreet SL Listing Guidelines.

There is a small conversation in the comments at NWN. There is a large conversation going on in the XStreetSL Forum. See: New Guidelines Forum Thread There is also another thread of conversations here: Chat About XStreet SL Listing Guidelines In the Chat there are several clarifications on subjects beyond just branding issues. Also, Pink Linden states there is a group of Lindens working on the same issues in-world. So, we will likely see this rule change coming into the SL world.
