Avastar 1.1 Beta Released

Today I see Avastar® has a new test version out. Gaia appears to have had it out since Dec. 8th. For whatever reason I am just seeing it show up in Feedly today. Since the announcement of Fitted Mesh Gaia Clary has been updating Avastar and figuring out how to work with the new Fitted Mesh options. Since the Fitted Mesh announcement in November there have been a dozen or so updates to Avastar as they add Fitted Mesh support.

Until now the releases were simply called test versions, which since they were released to users might be considered Beta versions too. The current version is: avastar-1-1-931_blender-2-64.zip. Update: 12/22 – now avastar-1-1-934_blender-2-64.zip. This release is called a beta version in the announcement: Avastar-1-1 (beta). Gaia says they plan for this to be the version that goes to final release. So, in the newer SL terminology we might consider this more of a release candidate than a beta version.

Second Life 2013 in Review

I’ve found it interesting to look back to see what has happened in Second Life™ during the past year. In 2012 I did that and published: Looking Back at Second Life 2012. A much shorter version of that is: 2012 – The Short List.

In the sidebar I have an Archive selector. You can select any month to find articles within a specific month. I also try to make use of WordPress categories and tags. Each article has a section that shows published date, categories, and tags. Use category and tags links to find more articles on a specific subject.

This article is about 9,000 words long. If I have time I’ll make the TL:DR version like I did last year. But, don’t count on it.

Stroker ‘s Sexpo 2013

Vivienne Daguerre gave me a heads up that Stroker Serpentine is back in Second Life and active. See her article: Sexpo 2013.

There is a whole big dramatic story around Stroker Serpentine and his sex toys and furniture business. He left SL for a time. Now it seems he has decided to come back. In September 2011 I wrote: Shockwaves in Second Life about his giving away his top of the line sex bed animations and leaving.

To mark his return Stroker is promoting Sexpo 2013. It starts December 21 and runs for a month to January 15. It is at: Strokerz Toyz. The region is open now. Many stores are populated. Some are still being moved into. It appears most of the shops are rented. But, there are a few available. It is probably fair to consider the region under construction.

Vivienne Daguerre has a shop at #211. That LM will work to get you there. If they change the landing point, it will at least put a beacon on the shop.

Second Life Viewer Fix

I wrote about a problem with the viewer repeatedly downloading updates. The cause is the shortcut a person uses to start the viewer. Initially it was the folder name that changed and threw off the shortcut. Now my recent update to 3.6.13 went into an update loop.

It seems the SL Viewer program in 3.6.11 was named SecondLife.exe. The new 3.6.13 program is named: SecondLifeViewer.exe. So, if you have a shortcut pinned to your desktop, you will probably need to change it again. Just unpin it.

The viewer update or install will create a new shortcut on your desktop. That new shortcut can be pinned to you task bar via right-click drag and drop.

You can also find a shortcut in the Second Life folder in: Programs Files (x86)/SecondLifeViewer. That can be dragged to the task bar and pinned too.

Scripting

We have a new Linden Scripting Language (LSL) function coming: llScaleByFactor(). It allows for uniform scaling of an entire linked set with one LSL call. If you size hair or shoes, you may notice the ripple of size changes as the item is scaled prim by prim. This function will provide a faster and more efficient way to accomplish the same thing.

This change will go into an RC release that is planned for January.

Andrew says this feature is already running in ADITI on there regions: Boardman, Borrowdale, Balance, Mayfair and Hawkshead. So, you should be able to test the function there, now.

Andrew Linden Leaving

Today in the Sever-Scripting meeting Andrew announced he is leaving the Lab for Philip Rosedale’s High Definition Fidelity. He likes Second Life and has enjoyed working on it. But, he is ready for a change and really likes working with Philip.

If you don’t know, Andrew is the oldest employee at the Lab. He was one of the first, if not the first, hire that Philip made when starting Second Life. His last day is this coming Thursday.

Andrew has been a big contributor to the Server-Scripting group. He will be greatly missed by many of us.
