Chat Log from Future of Second Life

One of the most interesting pieces of information in any SL topic is what are the users are thinking? That is a difficult question to answer. Because I log chat when I’m in meetings and use it as a reference later when I write a meeting synopsis I can look back and see what was being said at the event. So, I have the chat from the event Future of SL conducted by Saffia Widdershins and Jessica Lyon.

The event was in voice. So, if you are interested in the meeting’s subject content, this is the wrong post for you. See: Jessica’s Future of SL Event at SL11B and Video Jessica’s SL11B Event. This is about the users and their chat during the meeting.

I am interested in what people are thinking about SL1.0 and SL2.0. Hamlet is running a poll: Survey: Will Linden Lab’s Upcoming Virtual World Change How You Use Second Life Now? The poll  is still in progress. Jump over and add your information. (I voted.)

Video Jessica’s SL11B Event

The video is out. There was very little new information released in the meeting. But, Jessica did a pretty good job clearly explaining what we do know about the coming new world. Toward the end there is part of the meeting that is speculation.

For time approximate time marks and a bit of an index see: Jessica’s Future of SL Event at SL11B.

The names we seem to be using for the new world are SL2.0 or the shorter SSL… Second Second Life. The SSL is also an Internet security protocol, so that one could be confusing at times.

Jessica’s Future of SL Event at SL11B

Jessica is putting on an event to discuss the future of Second Life in the Fascinate Auditorium in SL11B. The region is full 80+. So, you won’t get in. I made it in, lucky.

I’ll update this post every few minutes. Well… meeting is over and I have made a post meeting edit.

SL’s Peter Gray Emailing – The Text

Peter Gray is Director of Global Communications – Linden Lab. He has emailed some in SL to make clear what the Lab’s statements and intentions are. Leslea Aldrin shared, with Peter’s permission the following email with the Builder’s Brewry. Ray Zopf tipped me off to the group notice.

The Text:

Here’s what we’ve said:

Linden Lab is working on a next generation virtual world that will be in the spirit of Second Life, an open world where users have incredible power to create anything they can imagine and content creators are king. This is a significant focus for Linden Lab, and we are actively hiring to help with this ambitious effort. We believe that there is a massive opportunity ahead to carry on the spirit of Second Life while leveraging the significant technological advancements that have occurred since its creation, as well as our unparalleled experience as the provider of the most successful user-created virtual world ever.

The next generation virtual world will go far beyond what is possible with Second Life, and we don’t want to constrain our development by setting backward compatibility with Second Life as an absolute requirement from the start. That doesn’t mean you necessarily won’t be able to bring parts of your Second Life over, just that our priority in building the next generation platform is to create an incredible experience and enable stunningly high-quality creativity, rather than ensuring that everything could work seamlessly with everything created over Second Life’s 11 year history.

Does this mean we’re giving up on Second Life? Absolutely not. It is thanks to the Second Life community that our virtual world today is without question the best there is, and after 11 years we certainly have no intention of abandoning our users nor the virtual world they continually fill with their astounding creativity. Second Life has many years ahead of it, and in addition to improvements and new developments specifically for Second Life, we think that much of the work we do for the next generation project will also be beneficial for Second Life.

It’s still very early days for this new project, and as we forge ahead in creating the next generation virtual world, we’ll share as much as we can.

If we had one message to share with Second Life users about this new project at this point, it would be: don’t panic, get excited! Again, Second Life isn’t going away, nor are we ceasing our work to improve it. But, we’re also working on something that we think will truly fulfill the promise of virtual worlds that few people understand as well as Second Life users.

Best,
Peter

Insane Second Life Hysteria

I’ve started to run  into people that are DEMANDING I answer whether they can transfer every bit of their inventory to the new SL-like virtual world (VW) the Lab is building. If the answer is no then the Lab is BAD and we all should stop spending and building today. They have to know today… Ciaran has an excellent article up on the new VW: Ebbe Altberg – “We Will Continue To Invest In SL And Keep Improving And Have No Plans For Any Shutdown.”

The people I am speaking with are horribly misinformed or hallucinating… it is hard to know which. The screams include: Linden Lab is ripping off the people… that sounds like a victim that has sucked up the class warfare propaganda of our day.

Ripoff?

The Lab is building a new VW just as a number of other companies likely are doing, think Facebook. Are they too ripping off Second Life™ (SL) users? No… That is life in a free competitive world. Someone is always dreaming up a better mousetrap in free market countries.

But, with the Lab some seem to think it is different. I don’t. The Lab either makes a competitive world that can compete in the new realm of coming VW’s or possibly ceases operation and we see SL disappear. Then where will our inventory of purchased things be?   …gone.

More Information on Second Life 2.0

Jo Yardley has a new post up: Ebbe talks to SL users about SL2. She has quoted a number of posts that Ebbe makes in the SL Forum. For a quick read her article is ideal.

If you want to jump into the conversation, search the SL Forum for Ebbe Linden. You’ll get a listing of all his comments and be able to dive into the thread that interests you. SL Forum – Ebbe Linden.

The thread titled Linden Lab is building a NEW virtual world was started by Jo Yardley. It is now 28 pages long. I think Ebbe is getting an education in the thinking of Second Life™ users. They are not particularly sane or rational. That doesn’t seem to bother him.
