Exchange Risk API?

O.O… say what? I came across this in the SL Wiki. This is a tool for those involved in Exchanging Linden money. But, it has an effect on all residents that engage in transactions. If you suddenly can’t get Linden currency, this service may be the reason why.

The currency exchanges have RL value and are the target of ongoing attempts to defraud people of their RL and Linden dollars, Euros, whatever.

Only those engaged in Linden currency exchanges can use the service. But, how it reports on an individual can be a problem for anyone.

Education Organizations in Second Life

I see the wiki has just been updated to show the educational organizations using Second Life. The wiki page providing a list of the organizations is: Second Life Education Directory There are 149 organzations listed (if I counted correctly). Each has an SLURL to their in-world location. Network Performance Tip

As residents of SL we get lots of information about tweaking our systems for better performance. Mostly we get information about the viewer and its settings. We are often referred to various network speed testing sites, like www.speedtest.net, to test network performance. But, seldom are residents told about tweaking their DNS resolvers. So, here is some information on tweaking your DNS settings.

SL Community Roles or Ranks Explained

SL Community Role Icons

The new SL Community Web Site has roles, or ranks. Mine is ‘Honored Resident’… which sounds kinda nice. It does make me wonder if they have one for AH or DS… for my opposite. 😛  Probably not. Whatever, we do have roles now. Apparently one’s role or rank determines what one can do in the SL Community Web Site.

The SL Community now has a series of roles to recognize users who contribute content valued by the community. I’m not sure how much the community contributes to one’s rank or how they do that. There is a FAQ on the subject here: Roles and Ranks

Second Life Clean Install

UPDATED: March 2015.

There are a number of tutorials and “How To’s” for doing a clean install of Second Life Viewers. Several viewers have their own instructions in their wiki or forum. I’ve read through a bunch of them. In general they seem to be written by a one-viewer user with some minor concessions to the possibility one may be using more than one viewer. I’ve had over 15 viewers simultaneously installed and working. I’ve also had things horribly balled up. So, I’ve experimented with several different clean install processes. This is what I’ve learned about Second Life Clean Installs.

Warning: This is Windows oriented. I don’t do Mac, sorry. And I don’t have any running Linux boxes. The difference in how a clean stall is done is mostly in file locations.

Matching Skin Colors

Color Matching
Show Color Tool – Image #1

In Second Life many new products require some color matching to look right. The most notable of course is prim feet and shoes. Also, the skin color of genitals, which has led me to wonder if male color blindness includes black and white blindness… If you have been to one of SL’s Chippendales-like places you understand that comment. I suspect part of the problem is the number of different ways devised to match the color in SL. I’ll try to sort those out for you, so Second Life Color Matching and color picking are easier.

Also, if you haven’t bought your first pair of prim feet and shoes yet, I know where you can get a gorgeous pair for L$25. Read on.

Second Life Parcel Encroachment

This feature is being rolled out to the main grid Tuesday. It has been in testing for the last couple of weeks. The feature failed its first round of testing in the release channel. This week it passed, so now it gets promoted to the main grid.

This is the feature that allows you to return prims located in another parcel that encroach on your parcel. It is the center of the prim that determines which parcel it is on. So, a prim can be located on parcel 1 and extend into parcel 2. As things have been previously the owner of parcel 2 was just screwed. Now the owner of parcel 2 will be able to return an encroaching prim.
