#SL Viewer Update Week 45

The main viewer has moved up to version 3.2.0-244443. The Beta viewer is now up to 3.2.1-244666 (someone have a sense of humor?) And today the Snowstorm Development viewer is at 3.2.3-244722. I mostly use the Development viewer. So, I’m always unsure what the main viewer is doing or what is or is not included in it. I’ll explain what the viewers are and where you can get them and what other Linden Lab viewers are available.

Other Viewers

The three SL Viewers listed above are the primary viewers in use by residents, excluding third party viewers. But, they are not the only Linden Lab viewers available. The above viewers are available from the main Second Life Download page. Under More Viewers (More or Alternate Second Life Viewers) is a link to the Wiki page listing the other SL Viewers and Third Party Viewers (TPV.)

SL Viewer 3.1.0 Upload Problems

This morning I found a number of the mesh creators posting about Collada upload problems. Check this thread: Can’t upload in the new viewer.

Since some experienced mesh creators are having problems and it is more than one, it seems to be a viewer problem.

It seems once a problem LoD version of the model is included, the uploader goes nuts and cannot recover. The grayed out upload and calc buttons never recover. A viewer restart clears the buttons but not the particular LoD version problem.

Charlar Linden has seen the thread and is watching for their JIRA.

Land Impact

This version is the one that changes labeling from Prim Equivalence to Land Impact. It has been so long since I’ve used the main viewer I forget people have been dealing with PE all this time. Hopefully the change to Land Impact and the new Linden post on how it works will help people better understand Collada Model costs.

More New SL Viewer News

Tateru Nino has and article out on the coming new viewer. See: Say goodbye to the side-bar. Rhett Linden talks Second Life UI redesign goals. I got it and took it for a spin. The image here shows the new user interface.

Second Life
New Viewer Interface

You can see the new 3.2.1 Viewer interface, if you are using the Development Viewer. It has a few problems:

Known Issues:

        nearby voice info once opened.
o Viewer crashes when updating UI size in preferences.
o The Speak button is activated when dragging and dropping between
toolbars and/or moving back to the Tool Box.
o Viewer crash when moving the speak button from one toolbar to
another when there is an active call request.
o Teleport history doesn't display visited locations.
o Viewer crash when double-clicking the mini-map in People > Nearby.
o Notification and conversation chiclets overlap.
o WASD controls don't move avatar while the Move floater is in focus.

SLViewer 3.1.1 (242977) Crashes

I’ve done pretty well with the development viewers, until today. I installed Second Life 3.1.1 (242977) Oct 16 2011 10:50:04 (Second Life Development). I started it and crashed shortly after login. I think as soon as it tried to render the world.

Error Message

We have seen lots of viewer crashes from the OpenGL problems. Most of those have been with the new video cards and drivers. With this version of the SLViewer I got an error with my 8800 GTS and driver 270.61 (8.17.12.7061).

Second Life Viewer Problems

As much as I use different viewers, I miss lots of the problems. Lance Corrimal, the Dolphin Viewer person, pointed out some of the problems in SL Viewer 3.x. There are a couple of gotcha’s.

Speed

SL Viewer 3 and viewers based on version 3.x code are slow. I’ve been using the SL Development Viewer for so long I expect it to be slow. If you are just moving to a 3.x based viewer… well prepare yourself. It affects the SL Viewer and third party viewers based on version 3 code.

Outfit Problems

We usually see these problems manifesting as problems with alpha layers. If you are wearing multiple layers then an outfit replacement only replaces one layer. That results in layers left behind from the previous outfit.

A work around is to remove the current outfit then add the new outfit. This does leave you nude for a few seconds. So, you need a changing room… or not, if you are an exhibitionist.

Crashing

If you attempt to teleport more than one person at a time, you have likely run into this problem. Inviting more than one person to tp crashes the viewer.

Minor Mesh Problems

Several people have not been able to upload Mesh in ADITI, the preview grid, but they can in AGNI, the main grid. Most often this is because they have not run through the Intellectual Property thing for ADITI. Yes, you have to do it twice, once for AGNI and once for ADITI. For ADITI visit:  https://secondlife.aditi.lindenlab.com/

Also, after viewer and server updates some people are crashing when the attempt to tp to the mesh sandboxes. See: VWR-26698

Also, the 3.0.0 has a video gotcha that causes some people problems. If you are having a problem, visit the Snowstorm Page and get a copy of the latest development viewer. There are some video fixes included that have helped some users.
