Second Life Avatar 2 and 3

If you make clothes for #SL avatars you know the problems with the SL Avatar 1, the one we have now. Making bikini bottoms, panties, and shorts is difficult as the texture mapping blurs sharp lines on some parts of the avatar. Shoulder straps jog around rather than run straight, so one has to jog the design to get close to a straight strap. It is a pain. So, the idea of a better avatar has been coming up for years. Are we going to get one?

The answer is yes and no. May be a more accurate answer is; some day. The Lab would like to build Avatar 2.0. However, their effort is going into getting general mesh ready for the main grid. (5/23 Reference – Nyx Linden) Any work on a new avatar by the Lab won’t start until after mesh is out and stable.

Second Life Viewer Breasts Physics

OK… this is the third article about breasts. I’m not obsessed with breasts. It’s more a fisherman and bait thing. 🙂 The Mesh Project Viewer Snapshot (2.6.3-255638) has the new feature. The Project Viewer available today is (225675), which does not have the new feature. Whatever, the Project viewers are only for the curious or those helping develop the Mesh Project.

New Physics Type Clothing Object

If you look you can notice at the bottom of the Mesh Project Viewers page is a list of older versions. 225675 is the current Project version today. That page shows the two previous versions; 225641 and 225624. I tried both and neither of those have the feature.

Now things get a bit interesting. In the current version of the viewer that item is not in the menu. So, while the video upload date is 4/2, the viewer version (225638) is dated April 1. OMG!

More Multi-Chan Hax

UPDATE: 3/2012 – The site where the HAX files can be downloaded is down. It may come back… or not.

Photoshop CS4 and 5 and Blender will allow one to accomplish the same thing as HAX. Both are easier as you can work directly on the 3D avatar. Look through the Mesh Clothing tutorials to see how to get the avatar model.

UPDATE: claireharford has started hosting the files needed for Multi-Chan Hax. LINK

I’ve taken some time to play with the multi-chan hax filter. It works, but it is not intuitive. The video tutorial that MistressOfDesign made on faces and socks helps. I think she did an excellent job fitting a lot of information in the time allotted. But, it still leaves things to be figured out.

When you want to make a pair of pants or a top you’ll find you need to know more. I’ve been sorting my way through Multi-Chan Hax (MCH). Below is what I’ve learned so far from starting a top/blouse. One thing I’ve learned is when it comes to making tops MCH is a tool to help you make things, NOT a tool that does everything for you.

If you want to follow along, look at the first tutorial on Multi-Chan Hax that I published and get MCH installed and tested. Also know this is not a Photoshop (PS) tutorial nor a beginner’s tutorial, it’s about MCH. So, I won’t be explaining how to do PS things. I’ll assume you know the basics of image editing and compositing. You’ll have to Google for PS help.

Multi-Chan Hax

UPDATE: 3/2012 – This was neat, but the site with the download is down. It may come back or there may be another download site. I do not know of another site and we can only hope the site comes back.

Photoshop CS4 and 5 Extended allow one to skip using HAX and work directly on the 3D avatar model. Blender will also allow import of the SL avatar model. One can use its texturing and painting tools to work directly on the model.

So, unfortunately, as with many things, HAX and this article are out of date.

This is neat. If you are a clothes maker in Second Life, you need to know about this way of making clothes. Clair Hartford posted a tutorial on the SL blogrum today.  I think the thing is awesome. I’m excited. If you want to make seamless clothes, this is something you really want to know. This process has been around since 2009 and I’m just now finding out about it. Darn.

Second Life Mesh Tutorial

Those into sculpties will or should know the name Gaia Clary. Gaia makes sculpty tutorial videos and runs the Machinimatrix.org blog. Gaia also makes JASS, Just Another Sculpty Studio.

Gaia has a new, and to me surprising, tutorial up. This one includes how to export your avatar from Second Life and get it ready for other mesh work.

The tutorial is for those making mesh avatars and clothes. Plus it is a way to export your custom avatar for use in Blender or 3DSMax. It goes on to cover attaching the mesh to the avatar armature and weighting the mesh so it deforms correctly with joint movement.
