#SL Damage Control

49:00 Some discussion on finding friends and things to do and what the Lab could do to enhance it. Some good ideas. Unfortunately they require effort on the Lab’s part and the efforts would be in the realm of community and web development… the least likely group to be able to see and understand the ideas IMO.

Will all mesh have to be built to the Ruth shape? As of now, yes. But, if the community pressed hard enough that might be extended to other shapes. However, it’s not just desire that is needed. Some clear technical advantage is needed.

It seems the Lab has decided that the Ruth/Roth avatar is the base to be built to. Of course no one uses the Ruth shape. If something closer to what we use were used, that would reduce distortion as the Deformer adjusts the clothing mesh.

Qarl has talked elsewhere about a hybrid mix of standard sizes and Mesh Deformation. By building to a tiny, small, large, and extra large base one might be able to get the best possible mesh clothes. So, one would buy the size closest to their shape and the Deformer would fit it to their body shape rather than your having to fit your shape to the closest available size.

Gianna  and I think this hybrid sizing and deforming is the likely final form of mesh clothing.

The Lab is talking about what would be better than Ruth. A problem comes in because the Lab does not want to dedicate resources to making the change to whatever is better than Ruth. It’s going to have be a ‘community’ thing. I wrote about the Avatar 2.0 ideas in: #SL Mesh Defomer at Risk.

1:20:20 How will this affect existing mesh content? Qarl’s answer is it won’t. It won’t help or hurt existing mesh. To take advantage of the Deformer people will have to re-upload their mesh and use the Deform-or-not switch.

Summary

The audio is about Linden Lab’s communication skills. There are neat ideas in the audio. I think any chance of them getting implemented is about zero. But, they have merit and the Lab has been surprising many of us this last year.

There is no new information about the Mesh Deformer or the At Risk drama, at least none that I haven’t already written about. But, I should have known. Until we get lots of examples sent in and they are analyzed any changes would have been made somewhat blindly. So, make or ask your favorite designer to send in examples.
