Second Life Viewer 2.3.0 Released

Today Linden Lab’s Jack Linden posted the new standard viewer is now version 2.3.0-214726. Logging on I find it is not yet mandatory for 2.2.0 users. Those using 1.23 and TPV’s will be able to continue using those viewers. However, because Display Names are part of this release how one uses the 3 input fields in older viewers is now an issue.

Installing

The download is really fast. The file is still 24mb and my connection has not changed, according to my speed tests, so the Lindens have done something different.

UPDATE
Many people are having a problem getting this version to run. To make sure it works, uninstall all your SL Viewers, Beta, Development, Projects, and previous SLV2 version. I don’t plan to ever use the 1.23 again so I removed it too. Manually remove all the SL Viewer related folders (local, roaming, and program files). Install 2.3.0 and then reinstall the Beta or any other SL Viewers you use and it should work.

Second Life Viewer – Snowstorm Project Update

Snowstorm
Snowstorm Logo

If you follow this blog, you know every so often I update what is going on with the Snowstorm Project. This tells us what is happening with and coming to future versions of the viewers. I leave out the things I find boring. This update covers items from Nov. 8 to about now.

Mute – Block – User Interface Clean Up

Esbee Linden started a personal project to clean up the user interface and get things better organized and laid out. Lots of feedback was about the change from using ‘mute’ to ‘block’. It seems most IM services and other messaging systems use the term ‘block’ for stopping incoming chatter from an annoying source. It looks very much like Linden Lab will start using ‘block’.

STORM-31 is about implementing many of the interface changes. Add your feedback there.

Imprudence Experimental Viewer 2010-11-13

Imprudence Viewer
Imprudence Viewer

The Imprudence team has a new Experimental Viewer version out, 11/13. They have announced this version has many significant changes. I’ll touch on those I think significant. You can get all the details here: Imprudence Experimental Release: 2010.11.13

Installing

I suggest you manually clear the cache after installing and before you attempt to run the viewer. Failing to manually clear the cache can drive the viewer to 100% CPU and Not Responding.

On Windows you MUST have QuickTime installed.

Snowstorm's Second Life Viewer Progress

Snowstorm
Snowstorm Project

If you don’t already know, the Snowstorm Project is the SL Viewer (SLV) development project. There are several things currently going on that will affect new releases of the viewer. These are the ones I found interesting.

Prim Alignment Tool

Many of you have seen the Qarl Fizz Prim Alignment Tool that is now starting to appear in TPV’s. It is in the Imprudence Experimental viewer. It is great. See: Qarl Fizz Prim Alignment Tool

Because of some technicalities about signing agreements and code licensing it appears Linden Lab cannot just ‘use’ the code. So, whether they are going to talk to Qarl and come to some agreement or write their own version of alignment has not been decided. Whatever, the feature is in the backlog. You can vote for the feature here: STORM-468 Add Qarl Fizz Prim Alignment Code to SLV2

Imprudence to Kokua Clarification

It is not surprising many are interested in the coming Kokua Viewer and somewhat confused. Whether it be this or that and did you mean… So the Imprudence peeps have put up a new blog post. It is a very well written set of FAQ answers.

See: FAQs about Kokua

Even more clarification…

11/10 – It seems the Imprudence team got ahead of things. The Aurora Simulator is not going to change name, in spite of that being announced. So, it will be the Kokua Viewer and the Aurora Simulator. See Imprudence statement.

Also, while people are setting up Aurora Simulators and they previously did work on OSGrid recent changes on the OSGrid seems to have downed the Aurora sim’s connected to OSGrid. No one seems sure of what happened. But Artemis Tesla and I could not find any operational Aurora sims today, not that we know where they are all located or have any inside information. Our best authority said,”[02:59 PM]  Simpy Merryman: all aurora regions are offline including the mega and trolls – due to the fact that Aurora is currently not working with the latest core upgrade….

Last Updated: 2010-11-9

Several people are having problems with the SLV2 crashing on start. Not only does the SLV2 do this so do several other viewers. There are a number of reasons for the crashes. Usually a re-install of the viewer fixes the problems, but when it does not fix the problem, what to do?

System Restore

Try a System Restore to a time when things were working. This is often the easiest fix. XP How ToVista/Win7 How To
