New Tech

An article from American Times appearing on the Forbes site: Microsoft Is Developing 3D Projection Technology That Could Turn Your Room Into A Game. This is about projection technology. I’m not how this would work in my little place.

Erik Kain writes: My skepticism around virtual reality tends to focus on whether gamers will actually use it as much as we think we might. Similar to how 3D movies haven’t really taken off in the home, I doubt holographic gaming is necessarily something that will become very mainstream, even if the technology permits.

…which echoes my thinking.

Erik also wrote: Either way, the next generation of gaming consoles is obviously going to be about more than just the graphics, or even just the games. It will be even more driven by hardware innovations than this generation has. So long as the games keep improving, more innovation in hardware is a welcome development.

I suspect he is right.

Anonymous Attacks Go Daddy

I am hosting on Go Daddy. Today my email is wacky and clients are calling trying to find out why their web sites are down and email is failing. A tiny bit of digging and call to support to confirm and yep, it is true.

CNN

Not my favorite news source, is reporting that Anonymous is attacking Go Daddy. This hurts many of the owners of 53 million domain names for which Go Daddy provides DNS. Register a domain with Go Daddy and they host the DNS regardless of who hosts the actual site. So, this is affecting lots of people.

Anonymous member claims to take down GoDaddy

FNC has an article too:

Every GoDaddy-registered site temporarily knocked offline

So, you may or may not be able to get to my site today and right now I cannot receive or send email. 🙁

Windows 8 vs Games

There is starting to be some considerable controversy around Windows 8. What I’ve seen of Win8 so far, I don’t like. I suppose if you are using a tablet or smart phone it is great. But, if you are a gamer, it probably is NOT going to work for you.

Take a quick read of an article appearing in BBC’s New Technology: Valve boss Gabe Newell calls Windows 8 a ‘catastrophe’.  Microsoft is including Windows Store in the Win8 operating system. It will be the only way to download apps to your Win8 device. Sound like fun?

I am not sure the Win-Store is really going to be the only way to get software into Win8 devices. But, a number of people are saying the same thing. So, it may be that is what Microsoft is planning.

Microsoft will take a 30% cut of every sale made through their store. The massively successful Steam online game store that Valve runs gives a commission on every title sold through their online market. But the Win8 users will not be able to use Steam’s store. So, if true, we are seeing Microsoft once again trying to lock out competition.

Some think that Win8 will be like Vista, a flop. Win9 will then be built to work and deal with market place realities and be what Win8 SHOULD have been.

The majority of Second Life users may well be holding on to Win7.

Happy World IPv6 Day

You may or may not know or care what your Internet Protocol (IP) Address is. But, it is required for your computer and other devices to connect via the Internet. That includes your cell phone, whether smart or merely bright.

We have been running on IP V4, version 4. Today is the official… designated… tipping point day… whatever, it’s called the World IPv6 Day, for the changeover to IP version 6. The first IPv6 Day was in 2011. We are now one year into IPv6.

An IPv4 address looks like ###.###.###.### and ranges from 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255. That gives us about 4.3 billion addresses. Except some ranges like 10.x.x.x, 172.16.x.x, and 192.168.x.x are reserved for private networks. Offices and home generally use these. They are considered none-routable. Meaning the first router outside your home or office will refuse to forward traffic destined for one of those addresses. This lets you easily setup private networks and saves on addresses. It lets your entire office or all the computers in your office to be reached by one routable IP address. Very much like one phone number can come into a switch board and reach any phone within an office.

GeForce GT 640 GPU Released

NVIDIA has released a new video card. New this card is retailing at US$110. It is considered a mid range video card. For Second Life® it is a decent card.

New GT 640

The card comes with 2 Gigabytes of Video Ram (VRAM).  It uses 65 watts of power, the same as a GT 440. The card is supposed to be 40% faster than the GT 440.

The GTX cards are better than the GT and GTS cards. However, this GT 640 does pretty well for the cost.

Google Chrome: Your Profile could not be opened correctly

If you are seeing this problem, it is annoying. The fix that Google Chrome Support recommends is a disaster. One loses all their browser data, bookmarks, passwords, etc. For someone that researches online that would be a disaster.

Google Chrome Error: Your Profile Could not be opened correctly

Fortunately, there is a fix that may get you going and save your data.

The Google Support fix is here: Create a new browser user profile. I don’t recommend it except as a last resort.

Google Support has a troubleshooting guide: Whoa! Google Chrome has crashed. These are good steps to try, but don’t wipe out files or your profile.

nVidia Driver Update

NVIDIA LOGO - Click for Download Page

nVidia has a new driver out today, version 301.42. This is the first WHQL-certified driver in the 300 release series.

This update provides WHQL support for the 600 series nVidia cards.

It provides performance improvements for 500 series cards.

There is a whole load of stuff added. FXAA has been improved to be 60% faster at MSAA 4x levels. Adaptive vertical sync has been added. I doubt the SL viewers can use that. Target FPS is included but games have to support it. Does SL? I don’t think so. But, I don’t know. New multi-screen, 3D Vision, and SLI features.
