Technorati Stuff

Long ago I entered my WordPress.com blog into Technorati. It just occured to me to enter this blog (nalates.net) into Technorati… Duh! Some days I am a bit slow.

Second Life Reddit

I have spent some time on Reddit. I used to regularly post on Reddit, but not so much any more. I see people talking about how handy Reddit is. Some say it leads visitors to their blog. Daniel Voyager in his article titled: Second Life on reddit says, “…it’s a very good way to get the latest Second Life news…”

So, I was wondering just how popular Reddit is. I needed to find some stats. It took a bit of looking but I did come up with them.

A quick look at them shows who most of the posters are. The far left site is Inara’s modemworld.wordpress.com. The web page chopped off the name.  Continue reading

Solve Media Stopped Spam

Thanks for your feedback on Solve Media’s Captcha widget.

In the last 24 hours I’ve gone from the escalating 1,000+ spams per day for the last few days to 74.

I am checking to see if I can save comment text entered when captcha fails.

Solve Media Captcha

I am trying out the Solve Media Captcha on my comments to see if it can block some of the spam flooding the site. Yesterday over 1,000 spams were in the cue and that was with several hundred blocked by Bad Behavior.

Please post a comment to this post to see how it works. Let me know if it is better or worse than other captchas you have used.

In general I don’t like the illegible captcha tools used by most sites. Solve Media supplies a readable captcha puzzle. They also sell advertising through the captcha widget/plugin. Getting money is always nice.

Bad Behavior

I’ve added the plugin Bad Behavior to this blog. I’ve seen a large up tic in spam. Not much makes it through to the comments list where I approve comments. But, the number flowing into the Spam List increased by a factor of about 10.

So, in an effort to keep the database a bit cleaner and faster, I added Bad Behavior. I’ll be watching it over the next few days to see how it works.

Let me know if it creates a problem for you when you attempt to post a comment.

Update: Apparently ‘Bad Behavior’ blocks OpenID. That should not block your comments on this site.

Finding Viewer Reviews

You can find all the published reviews of any viewer by Googling (that IS the preferred spelling – I checked) using a search term like: [Name] Viewer Review. The symbols [ ] denote text you replace.

To find my reviews look in the top menu for Viewers and select a name in the drop down. Not all the viewers have a page of their own. There is no reason for a viewer being listed or not other than I choose to make the page. I generally do that when I think it is handy for me.

If a viewer is not listed in the top menu, look in the left column for the Category drop down selector. You’ll find more viewer names there. If the name is not in Categories, I haven’t reviewed it.

Due Diligence

I suggest you be careful about who’s reviews you believe. There are hoax and scam viewers out there. The people that have made them have also made some bogus reviews. You’ll find them in various places. If you find a review here, on Inara’s blog, or SLUniverse you can be pretty sure it is a legitimate viewer review.

There are other sites that do good reviews. I’m not going to try and list them. I would miss some for sure. Just make sure you look at 2 or 3 sources before using a viewer for an Payment Enabled SL account.

Also… don’t take what I say as PROOF a viewer is safe. I often use a viewer for weeks or months on an account that does not have payment info.

Remember. It is your money and your responsibility to decide whether you think a viewer is safe. The Emerald Viewer scandal should have taught us that is no easy task.
