Myst-Uru News Wk20 2012

It has been some time since I wrote about Myst or Uru. These were the first virtual worlds in which I played. Myst Online: Uru Live was my first Massive Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG). When it closed in early 2008 I became one of the D’ni Refugees living in Second Life®.

Myst Inspired Devokan Tao

From time to time one hears of the Myst community in Second Life or OpenSim worlds and their affect on and contributions to these worlds. Hamlet at NWN wrote:  Myst & Uru Roleplay Regions Leave Second Life to Be Beautifully Reborn on OpenSim Grid. That is a bit of an overstatement. It is probably more accurate to say some regions closed and moved to other grids, but the people are still in SL. Now they are also playing in other grids too.

Developments in Myst-Uru

This article is mostly for those of us that play the Myst games from Cyan Wolds. I’m into Myst games so my SL friends have to deal with these posts every so often.

If you are wondering, Myst was the 1993 all time best selling computer game until the Sims came along. Cyan created 5 Myst-Story games and then tried to create a MMOG sequel about the time Second Life was starting. Cyan’s MMOG never became popular. But, it garnered about 50,000 players and gained a core group of players that stuck with the game giving it a reputation as The Game that Wouldn’t Die. The latest issue in this saga follows after a bit of history and explanation.

If you are an SL or OpenSim fan and have never heard of Myst or Uru, this won’t be of much interest and may not make sense. However, you may be interested in some of the sociological issues, but this is mostly for the Myst-Uru community. If you are curious about why trolls and online abusers do what they do, then you may want to read on.

Lots of ‘I am Quitting’ Going Around

I’m seeing lots of forum and blog posts about people quitting and leaving the community. They have lots of reasons why and most are about how the community is so bad and how Cyan has done so much to destroy the community. We see the same stuff in most online communities. However there are some unique aspects in the Myst-Uru community I will point out. First a bit about human nature to put us on the same page.

Cyan Makes Steam

For those of us playing the Myst series of games… Cyan Worlds, Inc. is placing several of their games on Steam. The announcement is subtle, just a small addition on their ‘Products – Where to buy…’ page. See: Cyan’s Myst Games – It’s a Coming Soon Thing.
