Mesh Clothes and Stuff

I’ve always thought males in Second Life look way to gay. A bare chest and jeans is about as macho as they get. Now that mesh clothes are here I think that will change. I found a YouTube video that shows what is possible.

He is not the cutest guy I’ve seen nor is the suit an Armani. But it is a huge improvement over the typical skin tight suit worn in SL until now. I have hopes for more masculine looking guys.

#SL Mesh Update Week 34

This week Mesh and Sever updates are intertwined. Mesh has rolled out to the main grid, at least the mesh code has. I have yet to find where anyone has officially said mesh is enabled in all regions. I suspect it may be enabled grid wide. It is enabled in the region where my cottage is, which is a mainland region.

Runitai Linden Avatar

There is no Featured News item about it in the SL Blog. No mesh update in the Tools and Technology section. I assume they are giving it some time to see how the full grid handles mesh before making a splash. But, it looks like mesh is finally here.

Remember the ARC Nazi?

ARC is of course Avatar Render Cost. The lindens introduced it as a way to encourage more sensible avatar attire. What some residents did with it is to try to force others to conform to their idea of what is an appropriate ARC value. We call them Nazis.

One of the things I suspect ARC Nazis have not considered is that different viewers give different ARC values. Nor have they considered that the current ARC values have little to do with reality. The numbers are a bit faked. It might have been better if the Lindens had ARC shown as; Good, Fair, Poor, Bad, Awful, and Disaster. Sometime after mesh roll out is complete the Lindens plan to revise the ARC numbers.

What Mesh Means

I have seen many people asking what difference mesh will make in Second Life. Others want to know what the difference is between mesh and sculpties. The best answer I’ve seen is in New World Notes article: What Mesh Will Do for Second Life Fashion – Illustrated.

The source for Hamet’s article is Damien Fate’s blog. Damien is showing many of the differences between mesh, standard SL clothes, and sculpty clothes.

I’ll point out again that the clothing textures people make for their mesh clothes will be unique to their clothes. If you do not have the clothing template for a particular maker, it will be hard to make clothes for that brand. But, will creators want more people making textures for their clothes?

Second Life Mesh Update Week 32

This week the Mesh Upload User Group met in AGNI. Prior to now the group met in ADITI. The meeting filled up one region and we overflowed into a second. The location links for the meeting are wrong, but should get fixed this week. The questions being asked are getting more complex. Still, there is some interesting news.

Meeting Location

My understanding is that from this meeting on future meetings will be held in AGNI. I expect the new location to be the NW Corner of Mesh Sandbox 9. Right now one has to be a member of the Mesh Volunteers group. More information on that here: Mesh/LiveVolunteers. The Lindens will soon be removing that restriction. Then a resident may easily attend the meetings.

Mesh Cost Goes Down

I haven’t seen anything official yet. So, this may not be a permanent change. However posts appearing in the SL Forum are saying people are seeing 1-prim, actually PE, minimum cost for mesh objects. If this remains the minimum cost for mesh objects, it is a nice reduction in mesh cost. See: August 3–PE down!! 1 prim … Read more
