Emerald Viewer Update

The new team has the new Emerald web site, forum, and wiki up and running. Visit EmeraldViewer.net. Pay attention to which site you are on. Several knock-off sites use similar domain names.

Phillip Rosedale, Linden Lab CEO, has made a post on the SL Blogrum: Malicious Viewers and Our Third-Party Viewer Policy

I suppose it is about what one would expect. However, the last paragraph is harsh, as it probably should be.

If you have been using the Emerald viewer, for now we would encourage you to consider either one of the Linden Lab viewers, or an alternative third-party viewer.

Emerald Viewer Interview – Arabella & Jessica

Paisley Beebe did an interview on Treet.TV (I can’t find a video link – Audio Link page down to the Update! Audio Recording of tonights Paisely Beebe show) with Jessica Lyon and Arabella Steadham, members of the Emerald Dev Team, Sunday night 2010-08-22 about 7:30 PM SLT.

Prior to the Emerald interview Keiko Takamura was interviewed and A couple of comments were made about Emerald-Gate. Apparently things got complicated in SL and Paisley had to move the interviews to a secret location. Keiko was surprised at the passion of people in regard to Emerald, sort of an, OMG, they have pitchforks! — If you have not heard Keiko’s music, check it out.

Emerald Viewer

Treet.tv Emerald Interview

Starting out we learn Arabella Steadham, the communication manager for Emerald, resigned Saturday (Friday?) Night… It seems she resigned because she was asked to lie. She could no longer work in the environment. (It is hard to say exact times things happened because of Arabella being on the other side of the Date Line from Linden Lab). After resigning and during an emotional period she met with Fractured and others of the Emerald team. They decided they could save Emerald. But, Fractured would have to give up control. They asked him to resign and turn over control. It took Fractured a bit of time but he agreed and the servers were turned over to Arabella and Fractured posted his resignation. Continue reading

Emerald Viewer Scandal – Recovery?

Today there is a new post about the Emerald Scandal on the Modular blog. Fractured Crystal apologizes and resigns from the Emerald Team. This is no small step. Whether it will be enough to save the viewer and restore people’s trust in the development team, time will tell. See: [Emerald] Off with his head

Whatever the case, it is a huge step.

The SLUniverse forum has been abuzz with people discussing the Emerald scandal and to some extent so has the SL blogrum. In both those discussions it is obvious people have lost trust in the Emerald Viewer and are abandoning it.

The Emerald team uses the hits on the login page to measure Emerald Viewer usage. It would be interesting to see the viewer usage stats leading up to Fractured’s resignation. Even without them I’m sure there will be speculation about what actually moved Fractured. Continue reading

Emerald Viewer Scandal Erupts… Again

Updates at end of article.

On July 13 a post appeared on the Emerald Modular blog. Concerning recent activities.. Sounded like a bit of drama. Not uncommon in connection with the Emerald Viewer.

Now another post appears. Recent News, August 14. Both of these seem like they are part of the ongoing drama we see related to virtual world and online communities. But then we start seeing other blogs and forums picking up the story and expanding on it. So, what is the story and who do we believe?

Trust Turns To Rust

Trust to Rust?

Another problem is that some of the detractors of Emerald are lose wing nuts. That has to a great degree numbed the community to complaints about the Emerald viewer and dev team. This latest scandal is more fact based than drama based. There seems to be a real problem. Continue reading

Emerald Viewer 2439 Update

Update: 2010-08-11 6:45 PM SLT A new post appeared today explaining a bit more about the 2439 update and the removal of the 2439 beta release post being removed. Fracturedcrystal posted:

Posting to clear some confusion, I unpublished the previous post with beta 2439 because we are working on a new beta which fixes several security issues with some of the new features introduced in that version. There has however been unexpected technical difficulties in the 1.5 port, some of the other features in trunk, and our dedicated build servers, which we are working to fix at the moment.

The post has links to older beta releases, the 2226 being the newest. See: Re: Beta 2439

Original post: Today I find that the blog link to and article about the Emerald Viewer 2439 build have been removed. A post showing statistics of Emerald Viewer use seems to replace it. Presumably when the 2439 problems are fixed the post will reappear.

There is a thread in the Modular Systems forum titled Where is the 2439 release post?

AleiaSerenity Sapphire of the Emerald Support Team posts:

there were some issues with the avatar texture feature on the pie menu  so the dev’s removed 2437 [I think Aleia meant 2439?] from the blog

I suspect it was more than just a pie menu problem, but who knows? Read Emerald Viewer 1.4.0.2439 Released – Review and look at the bugs we know of… I suspect the inventory problems we have been seeing has placed a load on the LL servers as people clear cache and reload inventory. But, that is speculation. Not the inventory problems… the server load.

Emerald Viewer vs SLURL

Update 12/24/2016: See the newer version of this information: Second Life: How to FIX SLURL’s.

UPDATE: The Emerald Viewer is long gone. But, these steps work with any viewer and web browser. You are changing Windows’ settings. Use your viewers name in place of ‘Emerald’.

This SLURL thing has been a problem for me for a long time. The problem is clicking on any SLURL in Google Chrome, or any Internet Browser, causes the SL Viewer to start up. If I’m lucky and have Emerald running, the SLURL will open in Emerald, but not always. This is how to fix that problem, so SLURL’s open the viewer you prefer. These changes can be made for any viewer you like.

DTShady posted a solution on the Modular Forum: SLURLS and Emerald (dead links removed). This solution is for Windows. I think it works on all versions of Windows. I am only testing it on Vista.

WARNING! These are changes to your Registry. You could conceivably mess up your computer changing the registry. So, be careful and pay attention to details. Making a Restore Point for recovery is a great idea. (Google: “How to” make Restore Point) Also there are a couple of minor errors in DTShady’s posted file. (You would normally correct those in the process of adding your path, so it may be unfair to call it a mistake. Sorry.) Continue reading

Emerald Viewer 1.4.0.2439 Released – Review

Update 8/15/2010 – Be sure to read Emerald Viewer Scandal Erupts… Again

Update II: 2010-08-11More information was posted about 2439. It seems some security issue came up and they are fixing it. Some number of Emerald users are running into problems, inventory loss, av not rez’n, failure to login, viewer crashes… seems to be a small but significant percentage. There are apparently some problems on the Modular servers which are slowing the fix process. You can read it here: Re: Beta 2439

Word in world is that for now the 2439 version will not be blocked, so one can continue to use it. In a few days a new viewer version will be out. Then the 2439 version will be blocked.

The next release is to be based on the 1.5 version code base… sure… and that means? I’m not sure… yet.

Update: 2010-08-11 The blog post for the 2439 build of the viewer and links to it have disappeared. AleiaSerenity Sapphire of the Emerald Support Team posted: “there were some issues with the avatar texture feature on the pie menu  so the dev’s removed 2437 from the blog” …ok… Well… read through the bugs section of this post. I suspect the high number of inventory problems may have something to do with it too. The number of people re-downloading inventory has to be placing a load on LL servers.

Emerald Viewer 2439

Animation Browser (2439)

The Modular/Emerald team released its latest version late Saturday – 2439. This version appears to have lots of fixes and changes. So, you may find some Preference Settings have moved. It does retain my settings from the previous version. Yay

The change log at Modular seems to be lagging. So, it is hard for me to tell what is new and not.

For those less than thrilled with new SL 2.x interface, Emerald’s new version remains close to the 1.23 viewer interface. One really big plus in this regard is they have a Clear Cache button on the Edit -> Preferences – [Network] tab, something the SL 2.1 viewers lack, or I can’t find.

Updates are being added to the Bugs section. Latest 2010-08-09

Emerald Stats

New World Notes’ Wagner picked up on the high number of SL residents using the Emerald Viewer. See the article there: Shock Stat: Nearly 1 in 3 Second Life Users Reportedly Use the Emerald Third Party Viewer!

I suppose it would be a “kind of” surprise to anyone not using Emerald or the newer SL 2 Viewer. In older viewers one cannot see the viewer names in Avatar Name tags. Those people not using a newer viewer would be surprised that ‘so many’ people are using the Emerald Viewer. However, I am surprised the number is ‘so low’ …well less than I expected. I usually use the Emerald Viewer and if not Emerald then I’m using Kirsten’s Viewer. In both of those I can see the viewer name in avatar names. Continue reading
