And another month goes by… There is quit a bit happening in SL. I’m not that into it, but Linux support seems to be coming back. Several items are taking longer than anticipated… normal for software development. There are changes that will likely effect you.

Official SL Platform Updates
- August 3: Simulator release 2026-08-03.30838755483 deployed. It fixed region connection failures at login, teleport, and region crossing, and resolved a long-running region-handoff problem around Blake Sea and other water sims (Canny server#2666). The same fix reopened server#1899: after an unclean disconnect (for example a viewer crash), reconnection to a recently visited region can fail intermittently.
- August 3: Linden Lab reversed the April Mainland plan and confirmed that Gaeta 1 will remain open. Relocated holders may stay where they moved or request help returning; mid-relocation cases are handled individually. Zindra expansion regions also stay. Near-term Mainland work listed in the same post includes open-water homesteads for sailing and repairs to legacy baked region edges that cause crossing problems.
- August 12 / effective August 17: Automated Marketplace maintenance began. Products unlist if the merchant has not logged in for one year and that product has had no sale in one year. Entire stores disable if the merchant has not logged in for two years and the store has had no sale in one year. Nothing is deleted; merchants can reactivate listings by logging in and updating them.
- Late August: User Group notes placed the next named simulator update, Nectarine, as the expected vehicle for a new game-control UDP message and for limited region-crossing work (Pepper Linden) via the Snack RC channel. SLua/Luau work continued in public repos (integers, shared GC planning, script recompile caveat for testers). Official Linux viewer packaging and download-page work is tied to the 26.4 Lua Editor train rather than a separate ship date.
- August 25–26: SLS Main and RC channels were restarted without a new simulator deployment.
Viewer Releases
- August 10 / promoted August 17: Official default viewer became 26.3.0.31203661088 (“26.3 – Maint”). Quality-of-life and performance maintenance: add inventory favorites by right-clicking worn attachments; Windows 11 Voice Clarity; faster avatar render-complexity math; hangs on large viewer profiles; better discrete-GPU selection on laptops; UI performance. Bug fixes covered WebRTC crashes, avatar appearance (Kitty Barnett), block-list behavior (DarlCat), Marketplace URLs (Hecklezz), and MFA leaving the login screen visible after login. Crash rate after promotion was described as “pretty good.”
- August 21: Project viewer Second Life Project Lua Editor 26.3.0.32302693173 updated. This train is now classified as viewer 26.4 in the pipeline and is the first official-in-flight viewer slated to restore Linux builds. A beta/RC cut was reported with QA at month’s end; server-side Lua on Agni is still intended to land in step with that viewer, not ahead of it.
- Graphics Care Package: Remained a longer-horizon Project viewer. Geenz Linden continued mirror and Screen-Space Reflection work (including transparent SSR); not promoted in August.
| Channel | Version | Date in August | Role |
| Official Default | 26.3.0.31203661088 | Issued Aug 10; default Aug 17 | Maintenance / QoL |
| Project Lua Editor (26.4) | 26.3.0.32302693173 | Aug 21 | Lua editor + Linux path |
| Firestorm stable | 7.2.4.80712 | No August cut | Still the June 1 release |
Third-Party Viewer Enhancements
- Cool VL Viewer: Weekly maintenance continued. Documented pairs included Stable 1.32.4.41 / Experimental 1.32.5.11 (August 8) and Stable 1.32.4.43 / Experimental 1.32.5.13 (August 15–22). Linux x86_64, Linux aarch64, and Windows builds shipped; macOS on this line remains unsupported going forward without a self-build.
- Kirsten’s Viewer: S24 DirectX update August 2; S24 DX Pre-Alpha August 23.
- Kokua: August 23 builds 26.3.0.58718 (no RLV) and 26.3.0.62546 (RLV variants), tracking official 26.3.
- Second Life Mobile: Version 309322 on August 5 for iOS and Android — bug fixes and lower memory use.
- Firestorm: No new stable or publicly dated early-access cut found for August. 7.2.4.80712 (June 1) remained current. Firestorm X/beta pages yielded no August 2026 release posts in the scan window.
- Game Control (Leviathan): Viewer-side work advanced toward the Develop repo: permission model changing to
llRequestPermissions(PERMISSION_GAME_CONTROL), auto-accept on attachments/seats (popup only for disconnected objects), and a controller “mouse” mode that can drive clicks. Server message expected with Nectarine; not live on the grid in August. - Independent Vulkan viewer announced in July remained early-stage; no verified public release in August.
Grid / Performance Fixes
- The August 3 simulator was the month’s only numbered grid deploy and targeted login/teleport/crossing failures plus water-sim handoff. Operators should note the known regression on reconnect-after-crash.
- August 23 community reports described a same-day stretch of login trouble plus interference with support and L$ transactions (Second Life Newser). This was not listed as a numbered simulator release.
- Late-month channel restarts without code changes imply the Nectarine/game-control/region-crossing bundle slipped past August.
- Mainland edge-repair and sailing-homestead work announced with the Gaeta 1 reversal is infrastructure, not yet a dated simulator feature drop.
Social or Community Changes
- August 1: Sunweaver community memorial for founder Rita Mariner — a local but widely noted farewell gathering.
- August 3: Gaeta 1 remaining open was the month’s largest social-policy shift. Residents who had already moved, or who had bought/sold on the April timeline, had to re-plan. Lab communications promised individual options and compensation details for completed relocations.
- August 12–17: Marketplace visibility rules change how dormant catalogs appear to shoppers. Active merchants are unaffected; long-idle stores drop out of search until the owner returns.
- August 14–23: Official applications for the 2026 Halloween Shop & Hop (event dates October 2–November 1; setup September 25–28). Same structure as prior years: ≥20% discount plus a new exclusive gift or L$300+ gift card; Moderate rating; no political content.
- August (ongoing): Simulator, Content Creation, Open-Source/TPVD, and Mobile User Groups continued. Topics: 26.3 crash rate, 26.4/Linux, game_control permissions, region crossings, Marketplace URLs in-viewer.
- Late August: Linden Memorial Park received landscaping updates from LL and LPDW. Trans-Sansara Causeway construction continued (new sims and bridge/tunnel segments). Destination Guide highlights emphasized clubs and music venues (August 21 and 26). Grid-wide shopping rounds (UBER, The Fifty, Kinky, Manhood, ABSTRAKT, Wasteland, and others) ran through month-end into September.
Upcoming Events in September 2026
- September 1–26: Twisted Hunt Fall 2026: Into The Void — grid-wide hunt (Hunt SL listings).
- September 1–30: Fall Festival at Malus Park — seasonal market event (Malus Park / GridAffairs).
- September 2–30: Love the Dragon Hunt 7 — grid-wide hunt (applications closed August 31).
- September 20–October 3: Fae Faire: The Autumnal Court Hunt — applications closed September 1.
- October 2–November 1 (setup September 25–28): Official 2026 Halloween Shop & Hop — Linden Lab; creator applications closed August 23. Second Haunts Horror Tour applications remain open into mid-September for the October tour.
Wider Gaming Field (relevance to Second Life)
- GTA VI is locked to November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no PC or VR edition announced. Analysts expect a sharp lift in full-game console spending. For SL this is a attention competitor in open-world social play, not a technical peer; the missing PC/VR path also means the GTA V-style VR-mod afterlife will not exist for years.
- Consumer VR remained mixed: Valve’s Steam Frame “Great on Frame” certified list grew rapidly, while Meta’s 2026 Reality Labs cuts and a Pico launch cancellation underline a cooler headset market. UGC platforms (Roblox-scale DAU, Fortnite creator islands) still absorb the “mass metaverse” narrative. Second Life’s differentiators in this climate remain persistence, land tenure, adult-rated commerce, and creator scripting — the last of which is why the 26.4 / SLua path matters more than any single shopping event.
- Industry commentary on generative/AI worlds continues. SL’s near-term answer is not generative regions but faster official scripting (SLua), better crossings, and controller input — all still queued behind Nectarine and 26.4 rather than shipped in August.
Summary note: August 2026 was a promotion-and-policy month more than a feature-drop month. The default viewer moved to 26.3, the Lua Editor/Linux train advanced as 26.4, and the only numbered simulator fixed crossings at the cost of a reconnect regression. The Gaeta 1 reversal and Marketplace inactivity rules were the community-facing platform changes. Larger technical bets — grid-wide Lua, game_control, region-crossing improvements, Graphics Care Package — were explicitly pointed at Nectarine and later viewer channels, not August itself.
