Second Life® Monthly Technology & Community Report

Coverage Period: September 1–30, 2026
Generated: October 2, 2026
Focus: Official platform changes, viewer releases (official & third-party), grid/performance fixes, and key social/community activity

I am a bit behind, again. The A.I. gets me the raw information and then another agent re-writes it to imitate my writing style. Then I read it and and decide ‘no that isn’t how I would say that.’ Eventually I get it posted.

I have my distractions. There are loads of things for me to play with… and work… which always gets in the way. Whatever…

Hobbits at Work
Hobbits are too hi-tech!

September moved the next feature train into public testing without changing the default viewer. 26.3.0.31203661088 stayed the official download. Lua editing, an experimental Linux build, and cross-device direct messages landed as release-candidate and project viewers. The named simulator update Nectarine reached a release-candidate channel, then stalled on a UDP encoding bug.

Official SL Platform Updates

  • September 2: Web User Group notes covered Marketplace cleanup already running: homepage work aimed at faster loads in the viewer, and the Best Selling block had been replaced by Trending Now (search-weighted, not purchase-ranked). Search cleanup was reported successful. Event listings were limited to one event at one time on one parcel, to cut duplicate spam. Region search on maps.secondlife.com was in progress, with an open debate about exposing maturity ratings on maps that can be used logged-out. A LindeX sell survey was underway to map L$ flows. • September 9–11: The Lua Editor train became the 26.4 release candidate. Build 26.4.0.34502396632 (September 11) followed a September 9 cut that had a high crash rate and needed a hotfix. It added Lua scripting support on regions where Lua is enabled, tighter communication with the Second Life VS Code extension, an experimental Linux viewer, and current WebRTC voice plus maintenance fixes. • September 15: Simulator 2026-09-14.34880154149 shipped. It reworked LSL Game Control with a new permission and llGetGameControlMode, llGetGameControlModeAxes, and llGetGameControlModeButtons. It also added OBJECT_VOLUME_DETECT and OBJECT_LOCKED to llGetObjectDetails, and fixed avatars sliding on slow platforms, scripts failing to run when temp-attached above script-danger height, parcel script rules on inventory attaches, and voice agents partitioning after a voice-server restart. • September 22–24: Chat Modernization project viewer 26.3.0.35248298254 (notes dated September 22; an earlier cut, 26.3.0.33643480083, dated September 4) syncs recent one-to-one direct messages between desktop and SL Mobile. Local desktop logs are kept and merged with newer history. Group chat is not included. The same week, Lua Editor RC 26.4.0.35914774337 (September 24) improved live object and linkset exploration from VS Code, selection tracking, opening and saving scripts and notecards in objects, and reconnection handling. An experimental Linux build returned with this release. Sources: Chat Modernization notes, 26.4 notes.
  • September 23: Simulator 2026-09-22.35767837201 deployed. Beyond the Game Control and object-detail work, it fixed incorrect run-length encoding of zero values in UDP messages and the rare “Object update message is too long” case (server#2762). It also listed a server-FPS drop when heavy regions move onto the Luau channel (server#2729). Source: simulator release notes.
  • Through month-end: Default remained 26.3.0.31203661088 (issued August 10, promoted August 17). User Group notes treated 26.5 as the likely last major viewer of 2026, and Olive (after Nectarine) as the likely last simulator update of the year. Game Control viewer code was approved for 26.5 but had not been merged by the September 29 SUG. Harold Linden continued Lua script-serialization compatibility work so later Lua deploys do not force breaking rolls.
