Second Life® Monthly Technology & Community Report

Grid and Performance Fixes

  • September 1: No simulator deployment; all simhosts restarted. Nectarine, carrying server-side Game Control, was aimed at the BlueSteel RC and then slipped through QA. Source: SUG notes, September 1.
  • Week of September 15–19: Nectarine reached BlueSteel and included Game Control back-end support (Kyle Linden, Open Source UG, September 19). It left a bad zero-coded block on some ObjectUpdate messages. Viewers that drop the packet see it as packet loss; the bug can also touch the 26.4 viewer. A viewer-side fix is expected in 26.5, with a pull request planned for third-party viewers.
  • September 22: Unscheduled billing interruption affected LindeX purchases, Marketplace purchases, and Process Credits. Status marked the work completed the same day. Website maintenance ran September 23. Source: status.secondlifegrid.net.
  • September 29: Rolling restarts on the Main channel, completed about 08:16 PDT. Phone and live chat support were also down that afternoon; tickets stayed open. A further region maintenance window ran September 30. At the September 29 SUG, Leviathan Linden still had not locked the ObjectUpdate fix path; a release-candidate deploy on September 30 was described as likely, not confirmed as a Main promotion. Region-crossing test regions (Pepper Linden, Snack RC) were delayed by that bug. A third-party status tracker also recorded a website incident on September 1.
  • Voice: Roxie Linden said WebRTC attenuation may become tunable. Current falloff is flat for about 10 metres, then declines toward 60 metres. That is design discussion, not a September ship.
