Broader Gaming and Technology Notes

  • Controller input: Game Control’s September server functions line Second Life up with ordinary gamepad play (avatar, vehicle, camera). The viewer half is queued for 26.5, so September residents only get the LSL query side unless they are on a test viewer.
  • Linux desktop: Official experimental Linux builds returned on the 26.4 RC, which matters as more live-service clients treat Linux as a supported target rather than a port. Firestorm’s move off Ubuntu 22.04 runners is the same pressure from GitHub’s image retirement.
  • glTF materials: Index of refraction, specular, and possible transmission are the same material model used by other real-time engines. If transmission ships, creators get water-like surfaces without Linden water physics — useful for sets, not for sailing.
  • Voice: WebRTC remains the replacement path for Vivox. Tunable attenuation, still only discussed in September, is the practical gap for clubs and stages, where a flat 10-metre zone then a hard falloff does not match how rooms are built.
  • microLED: Outside our virtual world new tech is improving how we will see into our world.
    • Articles:
      • All-in-one polychromatic LEDs replace RGB for radically sharper displays (New Atlas, June 2024). Q-Pixel built a full-color microLED screen at 6,800 PPI, about 3K by 1.5K pixels on a panel roughly 1.1 × 0.55 cm. Each LED can show any color by itself, so it doesn’t need separate red, green and blue subpixels. newatlas
      • TCL Shows Off New High PPI OLED and Micro-LED Displays (Road to VR, May 2026). This covers TCL CSOT’s displays at SID Display Week 2026. The headline microLED panel is 0.28 inches with 1280×720 resolution and 5,131 PPI, which TCL calls a world record for a single-chip, full-color microLED. roadtovr+1

      • China Just Changed the TV Forever — MicroLED Explained (September 2026). It’s recent and focused on TVs. It covers how microLED works, why it could fix the weak points of LCD and OLED, and why it’s so hard to manufacture. youtube
      • For a more expert take, try MicroLEDs with Eric Virey of Yole Développement from The Display Show (2022). Virey is an industry analyst, and the interview covers both Mini-LED and microLED. youtube

Currently on the market are the panels with record pixel density and are tiny chips for AR/VR headsets. MicroLED TVs use the same technology but have far fewer pixels per inch. The high end chips have pixel density of 16,000 PPI (Pixel per Inch). The TV/monitors are planned for 5,000 PPI and lower.
