I am surprised at how many people ask in Firestorm Support if there is a way to turn off the pop up ACI messages. I understand those shooting movies wanting it off. The rest… not so much. But, this sort of defeats the goal of getting people aware of what they are doing to SL performance.

Firestorm has settings that allow users to turn off the ACI pop ups. Debug Setting: ShowMyComplexityChanges. There are settings in Preferences that change how ACI information is shown. See: Firestorm Avatar Complexity Settings.

The SL Linden Viewer has six settings that affect how ACI is shown but, turning the information off is not one of them. I think the information should be on. The level of nagging should be adjustable, at least to a point. But, total escape and ignoring what you are doing to SL performance… I’m against that. But, getting my way without infringing on others freedom is a problem.

There is lots of opinion to be written about how the feature will be implemented and used. But, it is opinion and more fluff than meat. I quickly find that tedious.

Two coming changes in viewers will make significant but less exciting changes. The Visual Outfit Browser is a nice addition. I expect that feature to be something I use as a part of my dressing ritual. I expect some will make tutorials on how to use it efficiently.

The VLC viewer that repairs streaming media will get TV’s working again. While I consider that sort of a recovery or fix rather than anything new or an advancement, it is significant. But, it doesn’t make for exciting news. Tutorials on how to change over to using it give us a bit to write about.

As I think about what is going on in SL and what the Lab is working on it isn’t so much that less is being done. But, the pace has slowed and that reduces the volume of reporting for a given time period. But, the pace is still fast enough some, if not most, third party viewers are lagging behind. I think it is the nature of change in SL feels different. It has shifted how we report on what is happening in SL.

Big projects like Project Bento have always taken a long time to implement. Adding mesh took years. But, there was lots being fixed as those projects progressed. Lots of improvements to scripting were being added. Lots of Linden people were adding things to SL. That has changed with the start of Project Sansar.

Now it is a smaller number of Lindens working on SL but, fortunately for us, an enthusiastic group that mostly chose to work on SL. They seem more focused and on script. I think the chaos of creative ideas which we could previously see some part of is now either less or more hidden, internal to the Lab.

Whether any of this is good or bad… it comes down to there is less to say about SL in any given week, at least in a technical sense. …I have some new dresses and stockings…

JIRA

Recently I have found I cannot use Google’s Chrome browser to access the JIRA. FireFox is the browser I use for the JIRA now. But, the first time FF loads a page it often renders funny and I have to reload it.

  1. It is frustrating that the first we know of some “scheduled maintenance” is the post that it is happening. ALL scheduled maintenance should show in the Google Calendar as soon as it is scheduled not just region restarts.

    • That would be nice. But, with limited staff and the inherent problems of group communication… I can’t see it ever happening.

Even the planned restarts are on automatic. I was surprised that today’s restart wasn’t posted as happening.
