Is America Losing Its Free Speech Rights?

Most European countries have already given up their free speech rights, at least as Americans see free speech. I suspect most Europeans don’t even realize how much they never had and how much they have lost.

The Federalist has a good article on the sad shape of free speech in America: The Coming Free Speech Apocalypse. I am certain most have no idea how much Hillary and the Democrat Party are against free speech nor that they have plans for limiting speech in the Democrat platform. She has to hate repeatedly being called out on her lies.

If you are thinking Trump is a conservative supporter of free speech, back up. He has plans to change libel laws and a history of using them to beat down his opposition (pre-political). He also has plans to curtail speech on the Internet… well, most all the politicians do. The idea of Super Pacs, which are American citizens banning together to create political action groups to counter corporations and the wealthy, is a major pain for Trump.

The GPO is spineless and offers no resistance to Trump’s strongman tactics. So, they offer free speech no protection.

Even fewer people have realized the liberally educated millennials have no love for free speech. They claim they are for it, but when pressed they show ignorance of what free speech actually is or why Americas with an understanding choose to tolerate hate speech.

Something like 40% of America is against free speech and think the government should control it and colleges should have speech rules. Something like 2/3’s of Americans are all for limiting ‘hate’ speech without ever having a single concern about who gets to decide what is hate speech.

Second Life has never been a bastion of free speech. With 60+% of SL residents being liberal/socialist I suppose it is to be expected no is no love of free speech.

May be a race of space aliens with brains and an understanding of what freedom is will show up and open an immigration service…

  1. Which European countries have given up their free speech rights?
i think you a little confused

Follow up reading. I think we have more effective freedom of speech than the USA. Granted is degrading with all this nonsense that govs need to read your emails. but still….. europe LOST no free speech rights.

      • You just aren’t paying attention.

    • I think you have yet to realize what you have never had and aren’t watching the news. Germany and France and the UK are all prosecuting people for voicing opinions.

      • Hang on a min! lol
Germany is accepted a Turkish request in courts for prosecuting someone for difamation.
This does NOT imply someone is convicted. Nor does it means that they will or are guilty of something. Is normal legal preceedings.
Freedom of speech does not give you free roam to do whatever you want. It does give you the right to do it and face any legal responsibility if ANY.
I think this is what everyone confuses. You are free to say what you want, but that is not a jail free card to not face the consequences of your words and actions if they are not lawful.
That said, i do get your point, and i get the passion on your post, although very biased as you might as well admit.
However using Europe as example i think is flawed.
In the same sense of freedom of speech, at least i expect you to accept that your facts are a bit over stated and over extended to make a point

        • Check the link I gave Gabzo…

A comedian razzing a political leader… that is not the defamation slander and libel laws are meant to prevent.

          • Right, never mind.

As i thought you – who preach about freedom of speech – are not willing to accept a counter argument.

Enjoy and have a good day

            • You of the closed mind… and little knowledge… I give you evidence, you give me opinion.

Accepting an argument or not has nothing to do with freedom of speech. Freedom of speech is most often about listening to opinions you DO NOT accept and yet tolerating their expression. You seem to lack an understanding of the basic idea, which was the article’s point. You became proof of point…

  2. Everyone is free to post – off the hat made up stats – and use google searches to back up their arguments. Neither are Facts. Which was all i was wanting to point you to. You Afirm that Europe lost Freedom of speech. Thats incorrect.
60% of SL ppl are liberal/socialist. Says WHO? show me the data?
Everyone can come up with stats to pain their arguments as they want YES that is freedom of speech. And i am not against your point of view, in fact i think it tends to what future will bring to us all. I am only stating to you that they might be founded on incorrect assumptions and comparatives.

    • Hamlet quotes the pole generating the 60% stat in one of his articles and sources it. I assume you think I don’t check my sources and just use any number that supports my argument because you do that… Transference?

I gave you the Google search that produces 580,000 articles mostly from news sources European and American talking about the subject. If you think there are no facts in that content… perhaps I could recommend a good psychiatrist.

One of my points is Europeans don’t know what free speech is. That you think the comedian slandered Erdogan and should be held accountable is proof enough.

  3. Since your “sources” are not quoting this, here an English translation of the Boehmermann poem, in case you still have doubt this was anything but a punishable case of diffamation:
“Böhmermann: This would be considered illegal. The ‘poem’ is named „abusive criticism“: „Sod-dumb, cowardly and hesitant/ Is Erdogan the President/ His boner smells like Döner/ Even a pig’s fart smells finer/ He’s the man who punches girls/ while wearing a bloody rubber mask/ Things he loves the most/ is shagging goats/ and oppressing minorities This kind of criticism would be illegal! Kicking Kurds, beating up Christians/ while watching child porn/ And in the evening instead of a nap/ Fellatio with a hundred sheep/ Erdogan is all things considered/ a President with a tiny wang/ I repeat this is an example of what would be illegal!
Kabelka: „One would not be allowed to say that“
Böhmermann: Every Turk can be heard whispering:/ This dumb pig has got shrivel-balls/ From Ankara to Istanbul/ Everyone knows this man is gay/ perverted and zoophil/ Recep Fritzl Priklopil/ His head as empty as his balls/ the star guest on every gang-bang party/ until his tiny wang starts to burn while having a piss/ That’s Reccep Erdogan“ This is what would NOT be legal by freedom of arts! Hey, don’t applaud! What would happen next?”

(source: From what I can tell, the translation seems accurate).
Boehmermann deliberately tried to explore the limits of free speech and creative freedom, he gambled, he lost… Erdogan filed a lawsuit against him, Merkel approved of it arguing it’s not the Chancelour’s, but a court’s decision whether a law applies, which is a reasonable decision.
Better make sure your sources actually report the full story, not just pick the bits that fit their agenda…

    • Well, you certainly have proved my point. That you think you countered my argument proves another point, you don’t understand free speech.

I suspect you are feeling about now that I’m not making sense. That just shows how far apart we are in the concept of free speech.

      • Well.. you do make no sense what so ever. But thats simply because like a dog you bite the bone and never let go.
Yes an american using Europe as an negative example is quite amusing, considering most Europeans know more about america than any american knows about Europe. I dare to say as any American knows about America….
Then again, and as a proof of understanding freedom of speech, but not interpreting it just as i want… i was always told that trying to argument with stupid in the internet is a proof of being stupid yourself. Guess i am a good proof of one.

Enjoy your day. If you ever use google again, try a different keyword, en-light your brain with some positivity. And don’t worry, Trump wont be that bad. If he is, you can always come to Europe and enjoy the full length of proper free speech. The type that is not used upon as a excuse when you fuck up but are not man enough to assume your responsibility.

But just to smooth you, because after all this is your blog, and does give you some “relevance”. YOU ARE RIGHT! there.. you can rest easy now!

(Hows that for a post in “abusive criticism” mode?)

        • I told you, you couldn’t understand what I’m saying to you. You basically admit and attack me. And you still think I am not making since, more proof of point. The proof of most hypothesis is predicting what comes next based on the hypothesis.

You keep going down the same path proving my claims. You offer more opinion without addressing the points.

Alinskyism debate has so corrupted European thought you don’t even notice you are ignoring debating ‘points/substance’ and target me or my search terms trying to belittle and attach anything other than the subject, basic Alinsky.

Assuming the search term I offered is the only terms I’ve used for deciding my thinking is silly. I will assume you wouldn’t deliberately try to be silly so, it suggests that comment is simply another Alinsky tactic in progress.

Try a long tail search: is free speech in Europe getting better or worse It yields 24 million hits. Of the first 10 results 6 about the death of free speech in Europe. The second page of results is similar.

One of my points is Europeans are NOT really noticing and a majority are OK with government controlling speech. You are proof of those not noticing. You are declaring you haven’t lost speech rights. The rest of the world is noticing as are reporters in Europe.

You can’t even address the points in that search. You don’t seem to notice them. If you read through the articles searches produce comparing free speech in various countries the USA nearly always comes out an top and Europe nearly always shows a down trend (loss).

You can keep trying to draw an emotional response. It basically doesn’t work because I understand Alinsky. I know that gambit.

You’ll get more and more frustrated demonstrating your dogmatism by saying it is me being stubborn and closed minded, but I keep providing more and more facts for my point of view and all you have is your opinion. You have nothing to point to. Obviously, you are proving each of my points.

I’ve tried searching for articles that support your position. A few, less than a dozen, Left wing and radical groups try to argue things are so much better now that government is controlling speech… You got nothing to back up your point of view, which proves mine.
