Rand Miller Interview Recorded Live at DMR

30:00 Question: Do you have any plans to participate in Mysterium 2013? It is the 20th anniversary. Cyan can’t be there. They may participate via in-world. Fans are greatly appreciated.

31:05 Question: Next time you visit Uru would you like to do a door run? – Rand told RAWA that he and his wife did a door run a few months ago. Rand talks about the fun of being able to design multiplayer puzzles after years of designing single player puzzles. Coming up with puzzles that were solvable with a small number of players that got easier with more was a design concept.

32:20 Question: IS there any way to add additional puzzles to the game? – Rand thinks if MOULa can get a life or its own and open source opens up, then fans will do that. Rand looks forward to being able to visit parts of Uru that he doesn’t know about and hasn’t seen before.

33:20 Question: A curator at the Smithsonian is rumored to have contacted Cyan, did one and what was discussed? – They did and it was a blast. Rand got to go the opening ceremonies for an exhibit the Art of Video Games. Myst was one of the games included. Other than feeling old from having his work in a museum it was pretty cool.

The museum of Modern Art in New York has contacted Cyan for permissions to exhibit their work.

Rand is excited that museums are interested. He believes it means the history of Myst will last longer.

35:10 Question: Did Cyan get to finish Minkata as Cyan had planned it? – Rand says yes. It was an age he wanted. He wanted a large area in the game. Because of computer limits designing a large area was a challenge.

37:15 Question: Were the DRC histories about the Kings created before, during, or after the creation of Ae’gura? – They were DRC translations done way after. The Kings’ Chamber was also made by the D’ni long after the Kings’ time, which contain the material the DRC translated.

38:33 Question: Do you have plans to ever complete the book of Miriam in the future? – They always have plans to complete things. The question is whether they can. Since the word ‘ever’ is included the answer is yes. It on the burner 20 rows back.

39:20 Question: After 20 years after Myst how do feel about fans expectations? – Rand says they are awesome in a couple of senses. They push Cyan. Wonderful experience. It is hard to meet expectations. It makes it hard to meet expectations with a smaller company.

42:10 Question: There are plans for this fall to get Robin Miller, Tim Rocking, and Jack Wall to talk about Uru. Would you [Rand] like to join the party? – Yes.

42:50 Question: Can you tell us about some of the future projects Cyan has coming up on the horizon or over the horizon? – Next is the remake of Real Myst for Windows and Mac, which is in the works. It has a couple of surprises. A Kickstarter project is coming. They only barely look a year ahead in their planning, about 6 months.

44:40 Question: {Rambling) Have you heard about D’nipaloza? – Yes.

45:10 Question: Have you recently gotten your guitars off the wall to play? – Occasionally.

45:40 Question: What is the story on the linking sound effect? – It is a funny story. Rand’s memory is: Robin and he tried various sounds. As Rand and RAWA put toget the past parts no one was happy with the linking sound. So, Robin made the sound by using a microphone and then processing the sound.

47:30 Question: (Rambling) You always have said you disliked playing the part of Atrus. But apparently not enough to push it to a professional actor. What is the story now? – Rand says he did dislike it. It was easy when it was just Robin and Rand. As things grew it got harder as more people were around. Getting in front of strangers was uncomfortable. The reason he did play the roles is he feels it is strange when an actor is changed out. That discontinuity out weighted his dislike of acting in front of strangers.

50:42 Question: If Cyan had more involvement with Myst II and IV, how would they have been different? – Rand finds this a difficult question because he isn’t sure what Cyan would have done. He feels it was an amazing job of making a story that flows well, from just a small amount of Cyan input, with the rest of Myst.

51:50 Question: Would RAwA come to an interview? – Rand thinks he would. Rand thanks RAWA for being his right-hand man for all things Myst related. RAWA and Rand discussed these question. RAWA was sitting with Rand during the interview. They fill in each other’s blanks.

53:10 Question to RAWA: Is this a deal [to attend interview]? RAWA says he has an appoint that day… an obvious avoidance… no further comment from RAWA.

53:30 Conclusion and thanks. List of credits read. 56:25

Summary

There is really nothing new that we didn’t already know. I think I am clearer on what is going to be allowed where, when fan content begins to flow in. It seems Cyan’s and fan’s content is going to be kept distinctly separate. So, if you want to see inside the various rooms and the guild hall in Ae’gura you’ll have to go over to the virtual world Lost Paradise and look for Ae’gura.

Cyan continues to be hamstrung by the economy and their sales. Resources are limited for them.

It does look like we are going to get more information on how the Plasma Plug-in for 3DS works or is supposed to work. Rand is open to a Q&A similar to this one for developers in regard to the 3DS Plug-in. Expect that to happen.

I am surprised there is no mention of the Oculus Rift. May be that was deliberate.

Later this year there will be gathering of Myst creators to discuss Myst.  That is being put together. We’ll hear more about that in time.

There is no new news about the Myst Movie. Rand continues to think it a good idea. But, Cyan and Hollywood are in different places. Cyan is working to figure things out.

It was fun hearing from Rand. But, nothing exciting in regard to Myst Online: Uru Live.

  1. Thank you so much! I haven’t been to the cave in ages even though I still miss a piece of Bahro stone from Eder Kemo.
I only got the fire flies there which I try not too lose by accidentally activating a thunderstorm page in relto.

    • I love having the fireflies in the Relto.

Most of my Uru friends are now in SL, OSGrid, or Lost Paradise, which has a fun Ae’gura build. So, I almost never go in the Cavern. Plus, the GoW hacks into the system concern me. While the GoW is a mix of people, the core people seem to have defined their personalities pretty well. I consider Cyan tolerating them a security risk. But, Cyan doesn’t have the time to fight with them to keep them out. So, I mostly stay out.

I do follow the MOUL, Open Uru, and Devokan Trust forums.
