Shockwaves in Second Life

End of SexGen?

The Alphaville Herald has a story about Stroker Serpentine leaving Second Life and making his Cadillac of sex beds, the SexGen Ultra 600,flagship of his SexGen line, available for free. Yes, for free. This was a multi-thousand L$ product.

Think about what that will do to other sex bed makers and the makers of sex animations. For them this is disaster, economic chaos. At least many are spinning it that way. When one considers there are entrepreneurs that sell prim cubes to noobies for L$100 one gives less credit to the sky-is-falling screams.

As The Herald points out, some regions pay tier from sales of their sex products. This release will impact many of them and we may lose a number of regions… or not. Only time will tell. But, it seems likely to me.

There is lots of drama in the issue and RL lawsuits.  Some of the drama is… discussed… here: Jumpman Lane – The “Kang” of Second Life. This is an interview that appears in the Alphaville Herald. You’ll have to decide who is telling which truth or building drama and ego or whatever else you can read into it. I have no clue.

Exodus Viewer Review Initial Release

There is a new kid on the block… The Exodus Viewer has just been released as a beta version. I got a download. \o/ Seems there was a minor goof. If you downloaded in the first couple of hours, you need to get a new download. Something about the settings not saving.

The viewer is based on SLV 3.0.6 code.

A New Viewer

FAQ

There is a FAQ page up on the Exodus site. It provides developer names, SL names. None tie to RL names. So, I’m curious if anyone knows the developers?

Singularity Viewer Review Status

Shows Idle Time

Knowing what is going on with some viewers is difficult. Avoiding confusion as to who is doing what on which viewer and how any one viewer is coming along is difficult. It’s confusing for me. If you see mistakes, speak up.

I’ve been meaning to take a look at the Singularity Viewer for some time. I’ve used it before. But, I tend to ignore V1 viewers. Sorry, just personal preference.

You can find information on the Singularity Viewer on their blog here: Singularity Viewer.

The current version is 1.5.10. The viewer is still based on the Snowglobe 1.5 code. Mesh is being added. Download Singularity Viewer.

Viewer Evolution User Group Closed?

Communication?

Once upon a time we had a group that dealt with the evolution of the Second Life Viewer. Esbee Linden ran the group for a time then left Linden Lab. After she left Oz Linden ran the group for a time. When Esbee came back to the Lab Oz dropped the meeting. Presumably it was Esbee’s to deal with.

Office Hours – User Groups

The User Groups page used to have a Viewer Evolution User Group (VEUG). That has been removed. Some of the meeting archives still survive. Some links for VEUG now forward to the Open Development User Group (ODUG) or so I’ve heard. I haven’t found any links left.

The ODUG meets Wednesdays at 1:30 PM SLT/PDT. See the User Groups page for location.

SL Mesh News Week 39

Mesh Clothes in Non-mesh Viewer

Collada 1.4.1

The latest mesh development viewer has support for Collada 1.4.1. Download Page. Most problems are fixed. There are still some reporting problems with Blender rigged mesh.

Auto Return ADITI Mesh Sandboxes

Auto-return got turned off in the ADITI mesh sandboxes. That is going to be corrected. So, the area will start clearing again, probably by the time you read this.

JIRA SH-2240

As OpenGL, I want applications to not use the fixed function, because it is deprecated. – SL is using OpenGL Version: 3.3.0. There are problems with the viewer and OpenGL. Fixing the issues is a high Linden priority. It is still in process.

For those getting out of memory errors, try turning off private memory pool management, which I don’t know if it is a compile setting or a Debug Setting (MemoryPrivatePoolEnabled).  See: VWR-26864
