#SL Server-Scripting News Week 10-11

There is not much happening. The Release Channels had the Inventory Apps Package running. That package is not going to roll to the main grid. So, there will be no roll to the main channel.

llGiveInventoryList()

A change to llGiveInventoryList() began  impacting people last Thursday, as the Release Channel rolls were delayed one day. Those using RLV and selling RLV related products started to encounter problems when in the Blue Steel and Le Tigre release channels.

Server-Scripting Meeting

By Sunday Kitty and Marine, movers and shakers of the RLV features, had found the problem and filed a JIRA. It got lots of community support and scorching flames. By Monday morning the Lindens realized they had broken a significant part of Second Life. The result is this Wednesday, 3/14, the change to llGiveInventoryList() will be rolled back.

Dolphin Viewer 3.2.10 (23198) Released

Today we got a new release of Dolphin Viewer 3. If you have an ATI/AMD video card, you may want to avoid this release or read carefully before attempting to use the new release.

Texture Compression

A new feature was added to help those with lower end graphics cards, those with less video RAM. Just as textures are compressed for downloading to save on bandwidth and storage space, so too are textures compressed as they are placed into video RAM.

If your card has less then 512mb of video ram, compression will be turned on by default.  If you have an ATI video card, keep it turned off.

Preferences->Graphics->Hardware settings.

#SL Content-Mesh Meeting Week 11

There is lots of confusion about what will happen to the Mesh User Group (UG). We do know it met today and Nyx, Vir, and Runitia were there. Because the User Groups’ page was edited to remove links to the group’s home page, we didn’t have much of an agenda. You can reach the page here: Content Creation/Mesh Import User Group. Watch that page for more information on the group.

Unofficial Mesh UG Meeting

The Future

It’s unknown. Last week Nyx said he would find out what he could. When I asked about it this week, he said, “We’re not quite ready to make an announcement as to how we will be handling these meetings in the future. Stay tuned!” So, the group’s future is still unknown.

Receive Items Folder – Update II

Today in the Commerce group word came through that Oz Linden and Brooke Linden posted in JIRA SVC-7748. The word is that after 300+ posts in one day on the legitimate use cases the proposed change to llGiveInventoryList() would create, the change will be rolled back.

The change was in the Release Channels on Blue Steel and Le Tigre. The llGiveInventoryList() change broke RLV and I hear some other use cases, but no one can tell me what those are.

So, the Lindens are listening.

The comments made are:

We hear you, we’re checking on it, thanks

Thanks to everyone for the feedback. We will be rolling back LeTigre and BlueSteel on Wednesday, and will not re-deploy until this has been fixed.

Received Items Folder – Update

Shopping \o/ - By: Bobsphotography.nl

Darrius Gothly has an article out: One Step Forward, Two Steps Back. The article is about 4,500 words. I covers the events that have been happening with the Direct Delivery and the received Items folder. If you have been following my topic Second Life Market Place you know all but the latest events. Here I’ll  give you a synopsis of Darrius’ article, which is a pretty good read. It avoids being classed as a rant IMO and I think provides a detailed summary and analysis.

The Problems

If you have been Second Life for some time you know the problems the Commerce Team is attempting to fix. The biggest of which is failed delivery of Market Place purchased items, scripted Give-Inventory items, and person to person gifts. All of which tend to fail when the recipient is off-line.

There is also the problem of Where-did-it-go when trying to find newly received items. Is it in Objects or My Inventory or someplace else? I suspect new Second Life users get annoyingly confused as older users get annoyed.

Oz Linden Interview Summary

Wednesday Jessica Lyon, of Firestorm/Phoenix project Manager, conducted an interview with Oz Linden, the director of open source for Linden Lab. After a previous crash prone four region Phoenix Hour the week before, Jessica conducted the Interview on a private region with no audience.

The Interview Arrived

Treet.tv made the heroic effort to stream the interview. With something like 350 or so people connecting, there were problems. But, Treet.tv  was able to make a recording of the interview and it is now available on Treet.tv. See: Specials -> Episodes to find it. LINK

I’ve written a review of the audio tape. I paraphrase wording. Transcribing is tooooooooo tedious for me. May be I can find a masochist in the SL community that will do that… Whatever, be warned that I listen, decide what they said and then write what I heard. I try to be objective and accurate. But, I have my biases and prejudices. So, I include the time marks so you can listen to the parts important to you.
