Second Life News 2019 Week 15

The Lab has posted “THIS IS A SCHEDULED EVENT Apr 1005:00 – 07:00 PDT”

Apr 812:12 PDT
Scheduled – Second Life will be undergoing scheduled inventory maintenance from 5:00 AM to 7:00 AM PST on April 10th, 2019. During this time, residents may have issues with any inventory related activities including building, logging in, as well as avatar and object rezzing. Please refrain from rezzing in-world, in addition to transacting in-world, on the Marketplace, or on the Lindex during this time.

This coincides with the grid update in the RC channels. So, expect problems. PS: Maybe not. Deploys says no rolls Wednesday.

Servers

Why am I crashing constantly… is a growing thread in the SL Forum. I’ve been hearing of this problem since about December-January. Then it was only older computers and viewer versions. However, it has been growing. With the last main channel grid update, the problem seems to have exploded. The Lindens have commented on it, Darn Teleport Disconnects (4/8).

On my own-

On my own-

People currently have various ideas as to what is happening and how to fix it. There currently is no fix. So, don’t be doing drastic things; clearing cache, reinstalling, clean reinstalling, reinstalling Windows… none of these things are going to fix it.

Depending on who you talk to it is Animesh that is the cause or Enhanced Environment Project or the upgraded OS the servers are being updated to or it is the move to the cloud (we aren’t there yet). Take your pick. All causes have people unaffected by the it-is-this-cause.

As some users and the Lindens understand the problem it is server side. So, all viewer brands are going to suffer the TP disconnect problem. I’ve seen it with Firestorm and the Linden’s SL Viewer.

Restarting the computer and router/gateway may help a little.

There are two things happening that are causing confusion. Failed teleports that end in a disconnect. This makes flying and sailing really frustrating. The other is what I call clockwork disconnects… every so many minutes you get disconnected. Early on this was like a stopwatch with a disconnect reoccurring precisely at 15 minutes. As more people experience the problem, we see the disconnect time varies, <15 to >20 but mostly in that range.

Some were working around the TP fails by canceling the TP by hitting the Cancel button and doing a World Map thing. But that is said to have stopped working.

Another preventative is to open the information page of the destination region.

[12:46] Lucy: to get around the TP crash, what I do is load the destination’s information page and teleport when it loads. I use a TP HUD and have it list the destination URI’s and open their pages that way. That brief comm seems to establish some kind of connection.

I think an as good alternate is to search for the region name using SL Search then click the More Info link.

Some people with the stopwatch-disconnect would TP at 14 minutes and avoid a disconnect.

Singularity users seem especially hard hit by the stopwatch problem. But it depends on which problem you are experiencing. The TP disconnect is not limited to Singularity. So, avoid blaming the viewer for that one. However, Cool VL Viewer is said to have a fix for that TP one and not suffer the problem. I doubt it but would not be surprised. I just so hate the V1 interface I won’t use it unless I get totally desperate.

Singularity does have the stopwatch problem. Stand around for 15 to 20 minutes and you disconnect. There is a said FIX for the Singularity problem built into version Build 7509. Rumors say it fixes both problems but several of us doubt that. Fixing the stopwatch problem is likely.

This past week a server version with the proposed fix has been running on the RC channels. Expect that to roll to the main grid Tuesday. Hopefully, it fixes the problem. There are people testing whether the fix in the RC regions actually fixes the problem. The few testers say ‘no’ so it may not be fixed. The sample size is too small for certainty.

After the Server-Scripting UG meeting, Simon asked us to TP around and send him the results. I made 38 successful teleports without a problem. On that tiny bit of evidence, I would say it is fixed. At least until I go flying.

Flying H-160-Mid_004

Flying H-160

PS: So, after flying I would say things are better. I had been disconnecting on the 4th to 8th crossing. Today I made it 18 crossings before disconnecting and that was with my fat avatar (meaning 3+MB of scripts and mesh attachments) and a helicopter. Very KEWL helicopter (Shergood H-160 with MY PAINT).

The main channel advances to version #19.03.28.525781. This is the version that ran in the RC’s last week and has the UDP asset fetch disabled. But, some on the old viewers using UDP are still getting assets. So, things are a bit confusing. This may be an oddity of the CDN or Viewer caching.

Blue Steel, Le Tigre, and Magnum all will continue to run #19.03.28.525781.

All channels are running the same version this week.

Other Viewers

The Firestorm wiki got a bunch of updates over the weekend. This is a sure thing the viewer development is shaking. They want to be ready for EEP – Enhanced Environment Project. Animesh is out. EEP looks to be next with BoM (Bales on Mesh) not far behind.

Singularity – When the Lindens changed the operating system the simulator software did not work well with Singularity. A bunch of Singularity users were getting the stopwatch disconnect. The devs are fixing (fixed?) the problem. Apparently, the fix is not in alpha yet. But you can get it in a nightly build.

Other News

Seems there are new Liden made homes coming. Daniel Voyager writes about them in a Monday post, New Linden Homes & SSP Continent “Will Be Announced When It Happens”.  His information comes from Patch Linden via a Relay Rap Radio interview. (Forum PostsIn-WorldStream)

During Relay for Life the shows happen Sunday @ 3:00 PM SLT. Patch appeared in the 4/7 show. I can’t find a copy of the show. There is some information on the new SSP continent (SL Forum – August 2018). It came out a couple of months after Fawnne posted Pay Double for Twice as Much.

Word is older SL homes will be closing. Expect demand for the new homes to be high.
