Second Life: Server OS Upgrade & Coming Server Packages

The Lindens have been upgrading the server operating system. Mazidox Linden describes it, “For those of you who don’t attend regularly or just missed that meeting, DRTSIM-323 is an upgrade to the simulator operating system to bring it up to more modern standards. It won’t change anything you should notice, and could change anything, at the same time.

This is like a user changing from Windows 7 to 10. Everything working on 7 is supposed to work on 10. But, until you try it, you don’t know.

Mazidox says, “We are pretty confident we’ll be putting DRTSIM-323 on an RC channel on Agni next week.” That would be week 15 or April 9-15. As always testing could reveal a problem and delay that roll out.

Next week (#15) may also see DRTSIM-345 roll to the RC channels. This would be the first time in a long time that we have seen two packages roll to the RC channels in the same week.

DRTSIM-345 should improve offline notice deliveries, particularly group notices.

Also, the Lindens noticed a recent trend where a rolling restart would cause large numbers of objects to be returned when the region came back up. Obviously, that is bad and not something desired, so DRTSIM-345 has a fix for that problem.

It is also possible that DRTSIM-343, the Access control for EO & EM’s discussed in a previous article may roll its server side to an RC channel in the same week (#15), which would give us three new packages in RC. That hasn’t happened in a really long time.
