Oculus Rift Retail Pre-Order DELAY

Word is out that the Oculus Rift consumer version can be pre-ordered for a mere US$600. :/

What I find today is that if you order now, you MAY get your Rift by June… That is six months. If you have already ordered, you should see yours get shipped to you in the March 28th shipment, 3 months.

No one is saying how many were ordered. Lucky Palmer only said they sold in 10 minutes what he thought they would sell in hours… not very definitive. But, it does indicates sales were several orders of magnitude larger than expected.

We are told the online order system went down, it overloaded.

At this point I am waiting for reviews of the Oculus Rift that compare its performance to other HMD’s. Is it really going to be worth $400 more than the competition’s HDM’s?

I’m almost due for a new phone. So, I may trade my S5 for a newer S7… and start with Cardboard.

  1. Facebook built the website, I doubt it overloaded. That is a marketing move to generate a buzz. Also i doubt that they can’t meet the huge demand, because it can’t be that big at that price. Of course there are early adopters that are willing to pay that much, so why not take their money before serving the mass market at the originally expected price of 300 USD. I mean compare it to graphic cards. High end products easily sell for 1000 USD when they are new and then then drop very fast in price. So either Oculus starts selling a “light” version in a few months or HTC will play that role. Don’t they collaborate?

    • So the real buzz mabey comes in 2018. i do not expect a hugh price drop before that. like with graphics card it most take 2 years before the drop in price. When new cards are released !

I expect most oculus rift sales to developers for software and a few early adopters.

  2. Not too keen on getting closed-source goggle from Facebook-owned company.

    StarVR has my attention though.

$600 is expensive, no question, but what $400 cheaper competitors are there? The only direct competitor (HTC Vive) is being positioned as the premium option over the Rift and is pretty much guaranteed to be significantly more expensive. And for PC-based VR… those are your options.

Looking past the PC there’s PlayStation VR, but a) it’s PlayStation exclusive and b) if yesterday’s Amazon price leak is right it’s going to cost $800.

Beyond that the only other VR devices out there are for mobile, and while they’re certainly cheaper both Cardboard and Gear VR are suuuuper primitive in comparison to even the development kit Rift or Vive. It’s like using SL on a mobile app vs a computer: sure, the phone gets the job done, but the experience pales in comparison to the real thing.
