Firestorm Update Week 34

The Firestorm team has a new release out, version 4.7.3-47323. It is the viewer Managed Marketplace capable viewer. The team has post up on the blog: Firestorm Viewer 4.7.3-47323 Release! They explain they had some problems getting this version out and it is therefore a bit latter than they wanted. But, it is here now. 🙂

The VMM news is good. Also Experience Tools, attachment fixes, and other problems are added or fixed.

The Snapshot Panel has lots of nice changes and the ability to use the large or small preview window.

But, the bad news is if you are on Windows XP or a Mac, the viewer won’t run. :/ (see comments)

Also Windows 10 users with HD 2000 or 3000 graphics have to jump through some extra hoops. See the FS article. Also, there is a list of other changes and additions in the article.

A big plus it the Firestorm viewer allows allocating more graphics memory for the viewer to use. This should put an end to texture thrashing, the blurry to sharply focused, to blurry and repeat thing.

In the coming weeks versions 4.6.1 and 4.6.5 of the FS Viewer will be blocked to limit running version to 3.

Inara Pey has a review of the viewer: Firestorm 4.7.3: are you ready to rock?! She covers the new stuff. Plus, as she is part of the Preview Testing Team (team?) she gets the viewer before I do. She’ll have an earlier take on the viewer and its performance.

She and Firestorm recommend doing a clean install. This means you need to use the FS feature to backup your settings then uninstall the viewer. You have to restore after the new version is installed and then restart the viewer.

This is a big update. Lots of stuff.

It will be a few days before we know if the rush to get this one out has had any negative aspects. I’ve just installed the viewer. It will be a bit before I decide if it is better, worse, or just different.

  1. Uh, no, Nalates. Please read closer. Firestorm 4.7.3 will not run on Mac OS X 10.6 and earlier. It’ll run fine on 10.7 and later, though we have no solid data on whether it runs on the 10.11 El Capitan previews.

  2. I have a mac running Yosemite 10.10.5. Although the viewer does run smoothly when it runs, and the features are pretty nifty, I am crashing constantly since the update from the Firestorm beta to the actual release. I’m about to do clean install for a 2nd time in hopes of smoother performance. Hope they release the next update soon, and that it will fix the crashing.
