Group Chat

Simon Linden Tells us:

Yes some of the chat servers have been having troubles in the last few days.   I’ve been looking into that … the code running there isn’t super new, and the outages might be timed with some of those [hardware update] restarts.

In any case, there is an update soon for the chat servers, and already another in the pipeline.

This week there are no rolls for either the main channel or RC channels. Next week is a no change week. So, I expect no roll outs that week either.

We can expect tweaking to the CDN system. This week whatever they are doing that requires multiple restarts is ongoing.

The main reason for no updates is the hardware updating requiring the restarts scheduled for this week. Estimating time for any individual update or the group is difficult as Simon says, “We also have to actually open up the server box and look inside to see if it needs an update, so it’s random how long each one takes.

This shouldn’t do anything grid-wide, aside from extra region restarts.”

Viewers

The main Linden viewer is still 3.7.20-296094. This is the one that a small umber of people have a problem with. The fix is to get an RC Viewer and install it.

RC & Project Viewers

Not much has changed. Some of these viewers were updated to keep up with the main release and got fixes for problems discovered while in RC. But, little has changed this past week. We may see one of these promote to the main viewer this week.

Attachments Viewer version 3.7.21.296729Release Notes – This viewer fixes avatar appearance problems and attachment problems.

Maintenance Viewer version 3.7.21.296734Release Notes – This viewer is a collection of bug fixes and improvements.

Pipeline Viewer version 3.7.21.296736Release Notes – This viewer uses the new to SL HTTP Pipeline connection. It is the fast render viewer.

Snowstorm Viewer version 3.7.21.296724Release Notes – This version has open source fixes and improvements. The Japanese language and Projectors got some attention.

Project Experience Tools Viewer version 3.7.16.293901 – I’m not sure what is holding up the Experience Tools Project. We aren’t hearing much on it. We do know people are still on it and changes are being made, but no details.

The most recent word from the Lindens is from Simon, “… we’re trying to finish off the last few issues [in Experience Tools] and have that Real Soon Now (sometime in the future, no promises).”

Oz Linden tells us that the first release of Experience Tools will NOT have grid wide keys. He explained at the Server Scripting meeting, “It’s not so much that as there are more issues for us to deal with for grid-wide experiences, we don’t want to make people wait for the ones that are associated with land.”

Simon explained another problem with the grid wide keys, “We’ve talked about it [grid wide] before, and having a widely available data system like the key-value store would be really great, but there are a ton of issues with that being available, scaling it to cover the full SL population and all that.

So we’re going ahead with a more feasible sized feature set.”

Oz added, “Being able to do grid-wide experiences isn’t going to fall off the to-do list or anything.”

Project Oculus Rift Viewer version 3.7.18.295296 – This version is lagging behind. I am pretty sure not much is happening with it. Oculus Rift is behind many previous estimates for a retail release. Since the SL Oculus Viewer is not going to release until Oculus goes retail, there isn’t any motivation to work on a viewer that few people can use right now and that supports an in-development-device that is changing.
