Second Life Interesting Viewer 3.6.14-285213

Interesting RC Viewer

This viewer is not yet the main viewer for Second Life™, but it did get an update Tuesday 1/14. This is the Interesting RC Viewer. It is known for faster scene rendering. You can download it here: Second Life RC & Project Viewers. If you are doing photography, this version could save your sanity. Even shopping things are rendering fast. I haven’t got to use it much. But, it seems great, better than previous version.

Remember. To run the RC you need to turn off Automatic Updates or have Automatic Updates and Willing to use RC’s both enabled. The later is preferred.

The release notes have been updated and say:

Project Interesting is a set of improvements to how the viewer and server work together to know what scene objects to draw. We’ve already made the server smarter about sending the important, “interesting” stuff first, and with this release, we have a new viewer that does a much better job of storing and managing the scene data on your computer. This will not only improve the speed at which a location loads, it will also help with overall viewer performance.

  1. 1.       more viewer-side control of which objects are loaded in memory at any given time
  2. 2.       more aggressive scene caching – viewer stores whole region in cache, not just the parts in view when you log out
  3. 3.       faster scene load when visiting a region you’ve never been to before
  4. 4.       viewer does not load object from cache that are completely hidden by scene geometry
  5. 5.       expanded performance metrics
  6. 6.       BUG-4675[c] Viewer crashes while reading chat history
  7. 7.       SH-4606[c] Interesting: Small objects do not load until they are very close.
  8. 8.       SH-4627[c] [INTERESTING RC] “Object out of range” is not detected on teleport.
  9. 9.       SH-4631[c] [INTERESTING RC] Parts of linked objects are not shown in new release Second Life 3.6.11
  10. 10.   SH-4641[c] Interesting: Incorrect amount of system memory detected on Mac
  11. 11.   Plus four crash conditions from process calls a user cannot see.

Known Bugs

  1. 12.   MAINT-809[c] [PUBLIC]Setting 16x antialiasing crashes Viewer in Ubuntu 11.10 with GeForce 6600
  2. 13.   MAINT-3200[c] WL Haze effects are inconsistent between solid and transparent objects under water.
  3. 14.   MAINT-3197[c] Rigged alpha attachments don’t render for impostors.
  4. 15.   MAINT-3198[c] Legacy bumpiness renders funny on HUD faces with custom alpha mode
  5. 16.   MAINT-3213[c] Brightness and Darkness legacy bump maps render incorrectly on Intel GPUs.
  6. 17.   MAINT-3135[c] Cocoa Viewer: Mac: Maximizing the viewer leaves garbage on the screen
  7. 18.   WEB-4659[c] Direct Delivery Outbox fails in Linux build
  8. 19.   STORM-1971[c] MAC viewer – Renaming an object or clothing item in inventory results in automatic wearing

Is this going to be the next viewer promoted to the main viewer? We don’t know. The previous iteration of the Interesting RC Viewer was having problems. If those problems have been solved, it will gain good candidate status in the Linden eyes and have a good chance of being promoted this or next week.

Main Viewer

The current main viewer is version 3.6.13-284995. This is the version that fixes the Update Needed Loop at each login problem.

Other RC Viewers

We are down to two RC viewers; Interesting and Breakpad. The Interesting RC is about making use of the server side changes made to improve performance for how things render. It improves caching too. The Breakpad RC is about error reporting. The real difference in Breakpad can only be seen in the log files and in the data reported to the Lab. There is no immediate benefit to users running Breakpad as there is for the Interesting RC. But, it will make things better in the long run by helping developers to find problems faster.

Project Viewers

We have these project viewers:

  1. FittedMesh Viewer version 3.6.12.284458
  2. HTTP Viewer version 3.6.13.284698
  3. Merchant Outbox Viewer version 3.6.13.284731

I am expecting to see these update this week… may be.
