#SL Mesh Update Week 49

Several interesting things are going on this week. One is the coming change in the Content Creation/Mesh Import User Group. The number of questions and problems with mesh is decreasing. Mesh is working pretty well. So, the Lindens plan to widen the focus of the group to include more general content creation. Expect to see a blog post at some point announcing the change in focus.

New Meeting Location in Borrowdale - A Return

Meeting Location

The location of the User Group (UG) moved from the ADITI grid to the main AGNI grid. The UG meeting agenda and location can be found in the Wiki on Second Life Content Creation/Mesh Import User Group.

The meeting time is Tuesdays’ at 12:00 noon. That can change so check the wiki for the latest information.

Viewer Speed

We really need an active viewer group with Linden participation to know what’s going on and where in the QA tube fixes are. However, Runitia Linden gives us some information on his part of viewer development work.

I also started a thread on the SL Forum, How fast Is Your Viewer? Please visit and post your information. It is a casual survey, not very scientific.

From the casual discussion prior to the meeting and the forum thread some things are becoming obvious.

SL Partially Rigged Mesh

Some mesh clothes do not cover the entire avatar. So, one would not rig a mesh shirt to the legs and thus create a partially rigged mesh. In viewers 3.2.1 partially rigged meshes fail to upload correctly. Vir Linden suggests the same mesh be tried in SL Viewer 3.2.4.

There are fixes for the problem winding their way through the QA process. Viewer 3.2.4 is the current beta viewer. It is available on the Second Life Download page.

Textures Project

This is something residents have been asking about. The project would include things like bump/normal maps, chrome (reflective – unlikely too resource intense), specular maps, and similar textures.

The Lindens also would like to add some of these features. For now, they are focused on stability and performance. No comment on where they may be in the priority cue.

Double Sided Material

The question of whether we would get double sided materials/mesh was asked. The answer is the Lindens are not going to say. Whether they are avoiding saying no by side stepping, or have the feature in discussion and can’t say anything, we don’t know.

More Agenda Items

The Lindens are looking for better ways to get good agenda items for the meeting. Since it is opening to more general content creation topics certainly could come from more people.

Suggestions so far are to develop an in-world method to add items… ok, that could take some time. But, the Feed’s use of web pages suggests a possibility.

Some feel faster posting of the meeting minutes shortly after the meeting would encourage more participation. Andrew Linden is good about posting his meeting’s minutes. Charlar does pretty well with the Mesh UG recently.

Another is to take agenda items from the forum.

A Linden post on the changing nature of the UG in the SL Blog has been suggested as raising awareness of the UG. I expect to see something in Featured News. May be it will be somewhat like the Deploys series of posts.

For now the Content/Mesh User Group Wiki agenda is still there and in use.

Summary

I’m not sure how I’ll cover the coming change in what I’ve considered the Mesh User Group. It is certainly going to change and cover more. I expect there to be lots of interest in the Linden Realm Tools and lots of questions. So, there will be interesting information. The problem for me is in how I divide it up.

  1. Thanks for the Good job you are all doing. It’s true that we really need an active viewer group with Linden participation to know what’s going on and where in the QA tube fixes are. However, Runitia Linden gives us some information on his part of viewer development work. This will definitely increase the interest of many people.
